*TRAINING OF TRAINERS (TOT) ON EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE (EVD) PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE.*

Migori County Department of Health, through the Office of the Director of Public Health and Sanitation, is committed to strengthening the County’s preparedness and capacity to prevent, detect and respond effectively to Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and other public health emergencies.
This initiative forms part of the ongoing national and county efforts to strengthen capacities in early detection, investigation, infection prevention and control (IPC), case management, risk communication and rapid response to public health emergencies.

Given Migori County’s proximity to international borders and the associated risk of disease importation and cross-border transmission arising from population movement, continuous strengthening of preparedness and response capacities remains critical.
This Training of Trainers (TOTs) is intended to establish a pool of competent and skilled trainers who will subsequently support the cascading of EVD preparedness and response competencies to healthcare workers, Rapid Response Teams (RRTs), Community Health Promoters (CHPs) and other relevant stakeholders across the County.

Government allocates Sh29bn to build 13 new 300-bed Level 5 referral hospitals in Kilifi, Mandera, Marsabit, Embu, Migori, Nyamira, Turkana; Health CS Duale says.

The proposed 300-bed County Referral Hospital marks a major milestone in Migori County’s journey towards quality, accessible and specialized healthcare.

The facility will significantly expand access to specialist and critical care, advanced diagnostics, maternal and newborn services, emergency care and management of complex diseases, while reducing the need for residents to seek specialized treatment outside the county.

Beyond Migori, the hospital has the potential to serve neighbouring counties and border communities, while becoming a centre for medical training, mentorship, research, innovation and employment.

Most importantly, this investment will strengthen Migori’s referral system and bring quality healthcare closer to the people.

A stronger referral hospital means a stronger health system, healthier communities and a healthier Migori.

Child Stunting and Wasting remain a major Public Health challenge. In Migori County, stunting rates stands at 15%, Wasting 2.5%, Underweight 5.3% and Overweight 2% as per KDHS 2022, Moderate Child Food Poverty 55.6% and Severe Child Food Poverty at 22.2% (MIYCN-KABP Survey 2025).The Project focuses on maternal Nutrition, Breastfeeding, Complementary Feeding, Micronutrients supplementation and management of Acute Malnutrition, targeting children under 5 years, Adolescents and Women of child-bearing age.
PD Hearth is an internationally proven community-based model for rehabilitating malnourished children in their own homes and community. The approach targets at risk, moderately and severely underweight children aged 6-59 months. Children who are malnourished during this stage of life will not develop to their full potential. Early malnutrition affects a child’s physical, mental, and emotional capacity throughout their entire life.
Positive deviance’, means β€˜different in a positive way from what is usual practice’. β€˜Hearth’ refers to the place within a house where food is cooked and served. Despite limited resources, some parents find ways to raise well-nourished children. Identifying and understanding what these β€˜positive deviant families’ are doing differently in their feeding, hygiene, caring, and/or health seeking practices from the parents of malnourished children in the same community is the foundation for this approach. Then Community Health Promoter share this knowledge and teach these positive practices to caregivers with malnourished children in practical lessons called β€˜Hearth sessions’ where caregivers make nutrient dense meals made from locally available, accessible, and affordable food.
All the ingredients are brought to the Hearth session by the participant caregivers who practice cooking the foods at the Hearth session. Hearth sessions lasts for 12 days, followed by a 2-week follow-up conducted by the CHPs through home visits. CHPs follow up children at home on Day 30, Day 60, Day 90 and Day 180 and after one year and take the weight and MUAC of the child to monitor their progress. The purpose of these home visits is to encourage caregivers to continue the positive practices at home, but also to help overcome barriers caregivers may face trying to practice the positive Behaviors at home. PD Hearth empowers communities to take responsibility for addressing the causes of malnutrition by helping to identify local solutions to overcome malnutrition. The PD Hearth model has three main goals: 1. Quickly rehabilitate malnourished children 2. Enable families to sustain the rehabilitation of these children. 3. Prevent future malnutrition among all children in the community.
The Training was attend by:

-National Facilitators

Yesterday marked another significant milestone in strengthening Primary Health Care (PHC) services across Migori County as the Department of Health Services proudly received 133 autoclave machines for distribution to our Dispensaries and Health Centres.

The provision of these essential sterilization units will greatly enhance infection prevention and control (IPC) by ensuring that reusable medical instruments are properly sterilized before use. This will help reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections, improve patient safety, protect healthcare workers, and enhance the quality of healthcare services delivered across our primary health care facilities.

This investment reflects our commitment to providing safe, quality, and people-centred healthcare closer to the community. By equipping our frontline facilities with functional autoclaves, we are strengthening the capacity of our health system to deliver essential services while upholding the highest standards of hygiene and patient care.

The Migori County Department of Health Services sincerely appreciates this noble initiative, championed by the Director of Public Health and Sanitation, Mr. CJ Ayungo, whose innovative leadership continues to drive transformative interventions aimed at improving service delivery and achieving Universal Health Coverage.

The equipment were received and flagged off to the various Sub Counties through the Sub County MoHs by the CECM for Health Mr. Caleb Opondi accompanied by the Deputy Director for Public Health and Sanitation Mr. Tom Odhong, CHMT Members and the ASCMOHs.

Together, we continue to build a healthier, safer, and stronger Migori.
