9 CAUSES OF NEWBORN FEVER: Serious Infections, Environmental Factors & Urgent Care

A fever in a newborn (an infant under 3 months old) is always treated as a medical emergency. Because a newborn's immune system is highly immature, they are exceptionally vulnerable to severe bacterial and viral pathogens. While older children frequently develop fevers from mild, passing colds, a high temperature in a neonate requires immediate clinical investigation to pinpoint the exact cause and prevent rapid escalation.

🔹 Severe Systemic & Internal Infections
➟ Neonatal sepsis — A critical, fast-moving bloodstream infection that can quickly make a newborn profoundly unwell.
➟ Meningitis — A highly dangerous bacterial or viral infection of the fluid and membranes surrounding the baby's brain and spinal cord.
➟ Pneumonia — A severe lung infection that raises the core body temperature and can severely compromise a newborn's breathing.
➟ Urinary tract infection (UTI) — In young infants, a severe urine infection is notoriously difficult to detect at home, as it frequently presents with absolutely no other symptoms besides a sudden fever.

🔹 Localized Infections, Viruses & Environmental Factors
➟ Omphalitis — A localized, dangerous bacterial infection of the healing umbilical cord stump.
➟ Skin or soft-tissue infection — Bacterial infections occurring on the skin's surface or within deeper tissue layers can trigger a systemic fever response.
➟ Viral & Herpes Simplex infections — While standard respiratory viruses can make a newborn febrile, exposure to the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) is particularly dangerous for neonates and can cause severe, life-threatening systemic illness.
➟ Dehydration or overheating — Not all high temperatures are caused by an infection. Inadequate fluid intake (dehydration) or simply being dressed in too many thick layers in a warm room (overheating) can dangerously raise a newborn's body temperature.

🔻Structure of the Umbilical Cord
▪️Composition: The umbilical cord typically contains three blood vessels: two umbilical arteries and one umbilical vein
▪️Protection: These vessels are surrounded by a gelatinous substance called Wharton’s jelly, which protects them from compression
🔻Functions of the Umbilical Cord and Its Vessels
🔹️Oxygen and Nutrient Transport:
Umbilical Vein: Carries oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood from the placenta to the fetus
Umbilical Arteries: Carry deoxygenated, nutrient-depleted blood and waste products from the fetus back to the placenta
🔹️Waste Removal:
The umbilical arteries transport waste products, such as carbon dioxide, from the fetus to the placenta, where they are transferred to the mother’s bloodstream for disposal
🔹️Support and Flexibility:
The umbilical cord provides a flexible yet sturdy connection between the fetus and the placenta, allowing for fetal movement without compromising the blood flow
🔹️Development and Lifespan

💢 Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions that cause repetitive or twisting movements and abnormal postures.
These movements may be sustained or intermittent and can affect any part of the body.
Dystonia can be classified based on the body part affected (e.g., cervical dystonia affects the neck, blepharospasm affects the eyelids) or by the cause (e.g., primary dystonia has no known cause, while secondary dystonia is caused by another underlying condition or medication).
Dystonia can have a significant impact on a person's quality of life, including their ability to perform daily activities such as writing, walking, or speaking.
Treatment for dystonia may include medications, botulinum toxin injections, deep brain stimulation, or physical therapy.
The specific treatment approach will depend on the type and severity of the dystonia, as well as individual factors such as age and overall health.

🔸️Klumpke’s palsy
1. It’s caused by injury to the lower part of the brachial plexus usually C8 and T1.
2. The clinical presentation is claw hand.
3. Presence of Hornes syndrome.
4. Injury to the lower part of brachial plexus may occur as a result of excessive upward pull of the shoulder or traction ( causing avulsion of the lower nerve root, C8 and T1.
🔸️Erb’s Palsy
1. It’s caused by injury to the upper part of the brachial plexus usually C5 and C6.
2. The clinical presentation is the waiter’s tip.
3. There’s no presence of Hornes syndrome.
4. It may occur through difficult delivery as in breech presentation where there’s shoulder dystocia and a forceful pull of the baby is the option.
