What if the biggest obstacle between you and Allah isn't your sin but your shame?

Many of us believe that feeling worse about ourselves means we're closer to repentance.

But that's not always true.

Healthy guilt says, "I did something wrong."

It leads you to acknowledge your mistake, seek Allah's forgiveness, and grow.

Shame says, "There is something wrong with me."

It whispers that you're beyond mercy, that Allah must be tired of forgiving you, that you should hide instead of return.

Look at the first two responses to sin.

Adam (ʿalayhi as-salām) admitted his mistake and turned back to Allah.

Iblīs justified himself and refused to repent.

The difference wasn't who sinned.

The difference was who returned.

Perhaps today isn't about proving how guilty you feel.

Perhaps it's about taking one sincere step back to the One whose mercy is greater than every mistake you've ever made.

"Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers." (Qur'an 7:23)
