MRSA stands for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It is a type of bacteria (Staph aureus) that has become resistant to many common antibiotics, making infections harder to treat.
1. What MRSA Causes
MRSA can cause different infections, from mild to severe:
Mild infections:
Skin boils
Pimples/fulluncles
Abscesses with pus
Cellulitis (skin redness/swelling)
Wound infections
Serious infections:
Pneumonia (lung infection)
Bloodstream infection (sepsis)
Bone infection (osteomyelitis)

2. How MRSA Spreads / Causes Infection
MRSA spreads mainly through:
Direct skin-to-skin contact
Touching contaminated surfaces
Sharing towels, razors, clothes
Poor hand hygiene
Open wounds/cuts
Crowded places (hostels, prisons, gyms)
Hospitals / nursing homes (hospital-acquired MRSA)
Higher risk people:
Weak immune system
Diabetes
Recent surgery
IV lines/catheters
Long hospital stay
Previous antibiotic overuse
3. How to Prevent MRSA
Personal prevention:
Wash hands often with soap
Use alcohol sanitizer
Keep wounds covered
Do not share towels/razors
Bathe regularly
Clean frequently touched surfaces
Wash clothes/bed sheets
In hospitals:
Gloves and gowns
Hand hygiene
Isolate infected patients when needed
Clean equipment properly
Screen high-risk patients sometimes
4. Treatment of MRSA
Treatment depends on severity.
Skin abscess:
Drain pus (very important)
Sometimes antibiotics
Common MRSA antibiotics (doctor decides):
Vancomycin (IV)
Linezolid
Doxycycline
Clindamycin
Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole
Teicoplanin
Daptomycin (not for pneumonia)
Important:
Many normal antibiotics like methicillin, oxacillin, amoxicillin may not work.

See a doctor urgently if:
Painful swollen boil with pus
Fever
Spreading redness
Wound not healing
Shortness of breath
Very sick feeling
