We grow and nurture fruit trees in public schools to improve children’s access to fresh fruit, create greener and healthier environments, provide practical learning opportunities and help communities respond to climate change. We grow certified fruit trees in schools, health centres, and smallholder farms as a climate change mitigation measure, a food and nutrition security strategy and a carbon offsetting project. We are implementing a multi-faceted approach that addresses climate change mitigation, food and nutrition security, and carbon offsetting initiatives contributing to thriving ecosystems as briefly described below:
1. Climate Change Mitigation:
Planting fruit trees plays a vital role in mitigating climate change. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis, thus helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By focusing on certified fruit trees, we ensure the use of fruit tree species that are well-suited to the local climate and can thrive in the specific region. The trees provide shade, conserve soil moisture, and contribute to overall ecosystem health, further supporting climate resilience.
2. Food and Nutrition Security:
Cultivating fruit trees in schools, health centres, and smallholder farms contributes to food and nutrition security. Fruit trees provide a sustainable source of nutritious food, offering various vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Incorporating fruit trees into these settings enhances access to fresh, locally produced fruits, promoting a healthy and balanced diet. 3. Carbon Offsetting:
The planting of certified fruit trees serves as a carbon-offsetting project. 4. Fruity Rangers
We train the children using a hands-on approach, allowing them to get their hands dirty while learning practical skills such as planting, soil preparation, watering, and pruning. We also equip them with the knowledge and tools they need to monitor the growth of their fruit trees and keep them healthy. Through Fruity Rangers, we want to create a generation of environmentally conscious and healthy individuals who understand the value of caring for the earth and each other.
