WHEN A CHILD IS SENT HOME: A PARENT’S GUIDE TO RESPONDING WISELY:
Many Kenyan parents are receiving difficult calls from schools:
“Please come pick your child.”
Reasons may include:
– Substance use.
– Same-sex experimentation or relationships.
– Behavioral concerns.
This is not just discipline—it’s a moment for intervention.
How should you respond?
1. Stay calm first:
Reacting in anger or shame will shut your child down. Pause, breathe, then engage.
2. Seek to understand:
Ask gently:
“What’s going on?”
Behind behavior is often pain, curiosity, or peer pressure.
3. Separate your child from the behavior:
Affirm them while addressing the issue:
“I love you, but we need to talk about this.”
4. Take substance use seriously:
Don’t ignore or minimize it. Early action matters.
5. Approach sensitive topics with wisdom:
Avoid harsh reactions. Create space for honest conversations while guiding your child with your values and faith.
6. Rebuild structure and boundaries:
Be present. Monitor friendships. Re-establish routines.
7. Seek professional support:
You don’t have to do this alone. Counseling can help uncover deeper issues.
8. Check your home environment:
Is there emotional safety, connection, and openness?
9. Pray and stay grounded
“Train up a child in the way he should go…” — Proverbs 22:6.
Parent,
👉🏼This is not the end of your child’s story.
👉🏼Respond with truth, wisdom, and love—not fear or embarrassment.
This moment can become a turning point.
