Advocates like Michelle Omulo, Nicole Achieng', and comedian Mannerson Oduor have openly discussed their decisions, such as abstinence, vasectomy, or choosing not to have children, to prevent gene transmission. Medical professionals emphasise that with preconception counselling, specialised high-risk care, and treatments like hydroxyurea and IVF with embryo screening, pregnancy is possible. Every hour, children in Kenya are born with a condition that, without early diagnosis, could take their life before their fifth birthday. Sickle Cell Disease affects thousands of Kenyan families each year, and yet remains one of the most overlooked health burdens in the country.

At the Kenya Sickle Cell Disease Symposium 2026, hosted at Gertrude's Children's Hospital, leaders came together to change that story, from national policy to bedside care.

Dr Robert Nyarango, CEO of Gertrude's Children's Hospital, spoke about the responsibility hospitals have for early diagnosis and comprehensive care. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary at the The Ministry of Health, addressed the national commitment to integrating SCD into universal health coverage. Dr. Brian Nderu shared progress on bone marrow transplant services as a frontier of treatment. Dr Doreen Karimi addressed the realities of blood transfusion practices for patients living with SCD. And Emily Gumba, CEO of the Sickle Cell Federation Of Kenya - SFK, reminded us why patient voices must remain at the centre of every policy conversation.
