Fear and stigma often stem from one thing: a lack of knowledge. 💡

When we educate our communities about epilepsy, we shift the narrative from myth to truth, and from isolation to inclusion. Awareness builds empathy, and empathy creates spaces where persons with epilepsy can thrive safely and independently.

Let’s keep learning, sharing, and breaking down barriers together. 💜

Epilepsy is a neurological condition, not a mental illness but the overlap between the two is undeniable.

Stigma, social isolation, job exclusion, and poorly managed seizures take a heavy emotional toll. Over time, the environment surrounding epilepsy often triggers conditions like depression and anxiety.

Understanding this link is key to breaking the cycle:

📍Internal Stigma: Helping individuals accept epilepsy as a manageable medical condition.

📍Interpersonal Stigma: Educating families to prevent overprotection and isolation.

📍Structural Stigma: Pushing for inclusion in schools and workplaces so individuals can live independently.

📍Proper Management: Ensuring consistent medical care to prevent seizure-related complications.

Addressing epilepsy means treating the full person not just the seizures.

Standard medical care + community support = complete wellness.

Epilepsy shouldn't be a barrier to education or work. 💜

Every day, students are turned away from schools due to fear and stigma, while capable adults are denied jobs simply for declaring their condition. The truth? People with epilepsy can thrive anywhere as doctors, lawyers, and industry leaders when given the chance.

Incorporating the social value of health in addition to productivity gains gives a Return On Investment of 5.5 over 10 years.

This means that every KSh 1 invested in epilepsy management yields a KSh 5.50 return in productivity and community impact. 📈
It’s time to stop restricting potential and start investing in inclusion.

How do we solve the critical challenge of the high treatment gap which currently stands at 80% in Kenya? 🩺🇰🇪

Here is how KAWE is tackling it through a 3-step community model:
1️⃣ Engage village leaders to debunk myths
2️⃣ Train Community Health Promoters (CHPs) to identify cases
3️⃣ Provide CME training for local healthcare workers

Decentralizing care makes treatment accessible right at the roots.

True strength comes from replacing outdated misconceptions with medical facts.

Many people carry unnecessary fear around family planning and epilepsy, but the reality is clear: people with epilepsy can marry, form loving families, and have healthy children.
With proper medical care, safe treatment plans, and informed support, individuals with epilepsy lead full, thriving family lives.

Let's dismantle the stigma together by choosing awareness over outdated beliefs. Education creates a world where everyone can build a future without fear or judgment. 💜

In rural Kenya, accessing epilepsy diagnosis and treatment isn't just a healthcare challenge it’s a logistical and financial hurdle. From a lack of community awareness to limited training among primary healthcare teams, many families are forced to travel miles and spend thousands just to see a specialist.

But managing epilepsy shouldn't require a trip to a major city.

By decentralizing care and empowering primary healthcare facilities, we can ensure every Kenyan receives accurate diagnosis and affordable treatment right where they live. Healthcare is a right, not a privilege reserved for urban centers. 💜

It’s physically impossible for someone to swallow their own tongue human anatomy simply doesn't work that way.

Yet, because of this widespread misunderstanding, well-meaning people often try to force spoons, metal objects, or fingers into the mouth of a person having a seizure.

Never put anything in someone’s mouth during a seizure. 🚫

Forcing objects especially spoons or hard tools can shatter teeth, cause severe jaw injuries, cut their mouth, or block their airway.

What to do instead:
✅ Side: Gently roll them onto their side to keep their airway clear, during recovery.

✅ Soft: Cushion their head with a folded jacket or towel.

✅ Safe: Clear away hard or sharp objects and let the seizure run its course.

✅ Support: Stay with them until they are fully awake and calm.

True first aid protects without causing harm. Share this to protect someone today! 💜

Before my children were diagnosed, I had no idea. I was just hearing about epilepsy..." — Joseph, Father & Advocate 💜

Joseph’s journey changed everything. Today, he’s sharing his story to remind us all that epilepsy isn't "something from nowhere" it can happen to any family.

His message to us today:
✨ Break the Stigma: Epilepsy is a medical condition like any other. Let’s create a society where parents feel safe bringing their children into the light.

🏥 Healthcare Access: Specialized care shouldn't require long travel from Limuru or Mombasa to Nairobi. We need accessible clinics in every community.

📢 Government Action: We need ongoing public sensitization campaigns so everyone knows epilepsy is manageable and treatable.
