You go for liver function tests. The report comes back with ALT, AST, bilirubin and albumin.

You look for anything marked “high” or “low”. But what were these tests checking in the first place?

Let’s unpack a few of them.

ALT and AST are enzymes. Raised levels can suggest cell injury, but they don’t tell us the cause on their own. AST is also found in other tissues, including muscle.

Bilirubin is a waste product formed when old red blood cells break down. Your liver processes it so your body can remove it. A raised level needs further assessment because there can be several causes.

Albumin is a protein made by your liver. Its level gives useful information, but a low result does not automatically mean there is a liver problem.

These are some of the markers you may see on a liver panel. They give different clues, which is why your clinician looks at them together, alongside your symptoms, medicines and medical history.

You’ve probably heard of “good” and “bad” cholesterol.

But when you receive a lipid profile, can you tell which is which—and what the other numbers mean?

Let’s unpack it.

LDL cholesterol is often called “bad” cholesterol because it contributes to the buildup of plaque in artery walls. Over time, that buildup can narrow the arteries.

HDL cholesterol is often called “good” cholesterol because HDL helps carry cholesterol back to the liver, where it can be processed and removed. But a high HDL result does not cancel out a high LDL result.

Triglycerides are another type of fat in the blood. They store energy. High levels, particularly alongside high LDL or low HDL, are linked to increased cardiovascular risk.

And total cholesterol? It gives an overall measure of cholesterol in your blood. It does not replace looking at the individual components.

That is why “my cholesterol is normal” does not tell the whole story.

When you discuss your results, ask about the individual numbers and what they mean alongside your health history. The aim is to understand what, if anything, needs attention.
