IFAS in Pregnancy: Why It Is Important for Every Expectant Mother

During pregnancy, a woman’s body needs more nutrients to support the growth and development of the baby. One of the most important supplements given in antenatal clinics is IFAS (Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation).

What is IFAS?

IFAS refers to iron and folic acid tablets given to pregnant women to prevent and treat anemia during pregnancy.

Family Planning Methods Available in Kenya

Family planning refers to the use of methods that help individuals or couples decide when to have children and how many children to have. It is an important public health intervention that helps prevent unintended pregnancies, reduces maternal deaths, and improves the health of mothers and children.

In Kenya, several safe and effective family planning methods are available in public hospitals, private facilities, and pharmacies. These methods are broadly grouped into short-term, long-term, permanent, and natural methods.

1. Short-Term (Temporary) Methods
These methods work for a short period and require regular use.

Contraceptive Pills – Taken daily to prevent ovulation and pregnancy.
Injectables – Given 3 months depending on the type.
Male and Female Condoms – Prevent pregnancy and also protect against s*xually transmitted infections (STIs).

UTI vs Bacterial Vaginosis: What’s the Difference?

Many women confuse Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) because both can cause discomfort around the private area — but they are NOT the same.
A UTI affects the urinary system (urethra, bladder, or kidneys).

Common symptoms:
Burning sensation when passing urine
Frequent urge to urinate
Lower abdominal pain
Cloudy or strong-smelling urine

👉 It is caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract.
👉 It is treated with antibiotics.

BV affects the va**na, not the urinary system.

Common symptoms:
Thin white or grey va**nal discharge
Fishy va**nal smell (especially after s*x)
Mild itching (sometimes)
Usually NO pain when urinating
