What to do to empower nurses

Empowering nurses usually means giving them the authority, resources, skills, and support to practice effectively and influence healthcare decisions. Some practical areas:

1. Strengthen education and career growth
Expand access to continuing education, specialty training, and advanced degrees.
Provide mentorship and leadership development programs.
Support nurses in research, teaching, and policy roles.

2. Improve working conditions
Safe staffing levels and manageable workloads.
Fair pay, benefits, and opportunities for advancement.
Adequate equipment, supplies, and technology.
Policies that reduce burnout and workplace violence.

3. Increase decision-making power
Include nurses in hospital leadership and policy discussions.
Give nurses a voice in clinical protocols and quality improvement.
Support shared governance models where nurses help shape workplace decisions.

4. Invest in leadership
Encourage nurses to take management, administrative, and public health leadership roles.
Promote representation in ministries of health, professional boards, and healthcare committees.
Support organizations such as International Council of Nurses that advocate for the profession.

5. Use technology effectively
Train nurses in digital health systems, telemedicine, and electronic records.
Reduce administrative burden with better tools so more time goes to patient care.

6. Support wellbeing
Mental health support and counseling access.
Flexible scheduling where possible.
Recognition programs and healthy workplace culture.

7. Promote policy and advocacy
Strengthen nursing associations and unions.
Advocate for better workforce policies and investment in nursing.
Encourage nurses to participate in community health and public policy.

8. Public recognition and respect
Raise awareness of nurses’ contributions beyond bedside care: prevention, education, leadership, research, and public health.
