As we mark World Breastfeeding Week, we’re reminded that breastfeeding is one of the most powerful interventions for improving newborn survival and giving every child a healthy start in life.

Kenya has made remarkable progress, with 89% of births now attended by skilled health personnel. Yet early initiation of breastfeeding has declined to 60%. This shows that increasing facility births alone is not enough.

We must ensure every mother receives the support she needs to begin breastfeeding within the first hour after birth the “golden hour” that is critical for newborn survival, especially for premature babies.
The Kenya Every Woman Every Newborn Everywhere (EWENE) recognises early initiation of breastfeeding as a high-impact intervention for reducing preventable newborn deaths.
