6 INCREDIBLE MOVEMENTS YOUR BABY MAKES DURING A VAGINAL BIRTH
Have you ever wondered how a baby actually moves through the pelvis during vaginal delivery? 🤰🏽
It’s not simply a straight journey down the birth canal. Your baby makes a series of remarkable movements that help the head and shoulders fit through the pelvis.
These are called the cardinal movements of labour 👇🏽
1️⃣ ENGAGEMENT
The baby's head enters the pelvic inlet and begins to fit into the mother's pelvis.
2️⃣ DESCENT
The baby gradually moves downward through the birth canal as labour progresses.
3️⃣ FLEXION
The baby's chin moves towards the chest. This helps present a smaller diameter of the head to the pelvis.
4️⃣ INTERNAL ROTATION
As the baby descends, the head rotates inside the pelvis to find the position that best aligns with the mother's pelvic dimensions.
5️⃣ EXTENSION
As the head reaches the vaginal opening, it extends. The back of the baby's head, face and chin are then delivered.
6️⃣ RESTITUTION, EXTERNAL ROTATION & EXPULSION
After the head is born, it turns to realign with the baby's shoulders. The shoulders are delivered, followed by the rest of the baby's body. ❤️👶🏽
✨ THE AMAZING PART?
These movements happen through a combination of uterine contractions, the baby's position and the shape of the mother's pelvis.
Every labour is different, and the movements may overlap rather than happen as six perfectly separate steps.
🤰🏽 Pregnant mama, save this post! Understanding what your baby is doing during labour can make the birth process much easier to visualise.

FROM 1 CM TO 10 CM: WHAT REALLY HAPPENS TO YOUR CERVIX DURING LABOUR? 👶🏽
Did you know your cervix can go from closed to about 10 cm wide to allow your baby to be born?
This is one of the most incredible parts of childbirth. Here’s what happens as labour progresses 👇🏽
🔹 1–3 CM — EARLY LABOUR
The cervix begins to soften, thin out and gradually open. Contractions may start off irregular and become progressively stronger.
🔹 4–6 CM — ACTIVE LABOUR
Contractions usually become stronger, longer and more regular. Cervical dilation generally progresses more rapidly during this phase.
🔹 7–8 CM — TRANSITION BEGINS
You are getting very close to full dilation. Contractions can become extremely intense, and many women experience strong pressure, shaking, nausea or an overwhelming urge to push.
🔹 9 CM — ALMOST FULLY DILATED
The cervix is nearly completely open. As the baby moves lower, pressure in the pelvis can become much stronger.
🔹 10 CM — FULL DILATION! 🎉
The cervix is fully dilated, allowing the baby to move through the birth canal. This is when the pushing stage can begin, depending on the baby's position and your healthcare team's guidance.
👶🏽 THEN COMES CROWNING
During vaginal birth, the baby's head gradually becomes visible at the vaginal opening. When the widest part of the baby's head remains visible between contractions, this is called crowning.
❤️ ONE IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER:
Every labour is different. Cervical dilation does not always happen at exactly 1 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm and so on. Some women progress quickly, while others take much longer.
And being told you're "only 3 cm" does not mean you are doing badly. Your body and your baby's position determine how labour progresses.
🤰🏽 MAMA, SAVE THIS FOR LATER!
If you're pregnant or preparing for birth, this is one of those things you’ll want to understand before labour begins.
Which stage of labour surprised you the most — 1 cm, 5 cm, or 10 cm? 👇🏽

PE**LE DISCHARGE: THE COLOUR MAY TELL YOU SOMETHING
Not every fluid from the p***s means there is an infection. But if the discharge is new, unusual or persistent, it should not be ignored.
Here are some common types 👇🏽
💧 1. Clear discharge
A small amount of clear fluid during s*xual arousal may be pre-ejaculate (pre-cum) and can be completely normal.
⚪ 2. White or cloudy discharge
This can occur with urethritis and may be associated with s*xually transmitted infections such as chlamydia.
🟡 3. Yellow discharge
Yellow or pus-like discharge can be a sign of an infection, including gonorrhoea.
🟢 4. Greenish discharge
Green or yellow-green discharge is more concerning for infection and should be medically assessed.
🩸 5. Blood-stained discharge
Blood coming from the p***s or mixed with discharge is not something to ignore. It can have several causes, including infection or injury.
👃🏽 6. Foul-smelling discharge
An unusual bad smell, particularly when accompanied by burning, pain or itching, can occur with infection.
⚠️ IMPORTANT:
If you have pe**le discharge, burning when urinating, sores, testicular pain or recent unprotected s*x, don't guess the cause and don't self-medicate.
A healthcare professional can perform the appropriate tests and provide treatment if an infection is found.
❤️ Protect yourself and your partner: get checked rather than waiting for symptoms to disappear.

WHY DO SOME WOMEN VOMIT DURING LABOUR? 🤰🏽👶🏽
“Why am I vomiting when I’m supposed to be giving birth?” 😭
If you vomit during labour, you are definitely not alone.
Nausea and vomiting can happen during labour, particularly as contractions become stronger. Sometimes it is simply part of the body's response to the intense physical changes happening.
Here are 7 possible reasons: 👇🏽
1️⃣ HORMONAL CHANGES 🧬
Labour involves major hormonal changes.
Hormones involved in labour can affect the digestive system and contribute to nausea or vomiting.
2️⃣ STRONG CONTRACTIONS 💥
Powerful contractions can activate the nervous system and make some women feel nauseated.
The stronger the labour becomes, the more intense the physical response can feel.
3️⃣ PRESSURE AS BABY MOVES DOWN 👶🏽
As your baby descends into the pelvis, pressure within the abdomen changes.
For some women, this can contribute to nausea.
4️⃣ A HEAVY MEAL 🍛
Eating a large meal close to or during active labour may make nausea or vomiting more uncomfortable, particularly as contractions become stronger.
Whether you can eat during labour depends on your individual situation and your maternity team's advice.
5️⃣ PAIN, FEAR AND EXHAUSTION 😮‍💨
Labour can be physically and emotionally intense.
Pain, anxiety, exhaustion and rapid changes in your body can all contribute to feeling sick.
6️⃣ SOME MEDICATIONS 💊
Certain medicines used for pain relief or other aspects of labour can cause nausea or vomiting as a side effect.
If you feel sick after receiving medication, tell your healthcare team.
7️⃣ SOMETIMES VOMITING NEEDS ATTENTION 🚨
Vomiting during labour is not automatically dangerous.
But don't ignore persistent or severe vomiting, especially if it occurs with:
⚠️ Severe headache
👀 Blurred or disturbed vision
📈 Very high blood pressure
🤕 Severe abdominal or upper abdominal pain
😵 Feeling extremely unwell
Tell your midwife or doctor so they can assess you.
❤️ MAMA, REMEMBER:
Vomiting during labour can be frightening, but it does not automatically mean something is wrong.
Your maternity team can help determine why it is happening and make sure you and your baby are being monitored appropriately.
Take it one contraction at a time. ❤️
📌 SAVE THIS POST — you may not expect this part of labour.
And share it with an expectant mama who deserves to know that labour can come with some very unexpected symptoms. 🤰🏽👶🏽

7 THINGS TO CHECK FOR YOUR NEWBORN AFTER BIRTH ❤️
Mama, after those first beautiful moments with your baby, there are important checks that should happen.
You don't have to do them yourself — your maternity team will normally handle them.
But you have every right to ask questions and understand what is being done for your baby. 🤰🏽👶🏽
1️⃣ IS YOUR BABY BREATHING WELL? 🫁
Immediately after birth, your baby should be assessed to make sure they are breathing effectively, their heart rate is appropriate and their overall condition is stable.
If your baby needs help, the healthcare team will act quickly.
2️⃣ IS YOUR BABY WARM? ❤️
Newborn babies can lose heat quickly.
Your baby should be dried and kept warm. When both mother and baby are stable, skin-to-skin contact is encouraged because it supports warmth and bonding.
3️⃣ HAS BREASTFEEDING STARTED? 🤱🏽
If you plan to breastfeed, ask for help with positioning and attachment.
A good latch can make feeding more comfortable and help your baby transfer milk effectively.
4️⃣ HAS YOUR BABY'S MOUTH BEEN EXAMINED? 👄
A healthcare professional can examine your baby's mouth and tongue.
Conditions such as tongue-tie may be identified.
Remember: not every baby with tongue-tie needs treatment. If it is affecting feeding, your baby should be properly assessed.
5️⃣ WHAT ABOUT VITAMIN K AND VACCINES? 💉
Ask your healthcare team whether your baby has received or is due to receive vitamin K and recommended newborn vaccinations.
The exact timing and vaccines vary according to your country's guidelines and hospital protocol.
6️⃣ HAS YOUR BABY HAD A NEWBORN EXAMINATION? 🩺
A newborn examination helps assess your baby's overall health.
Depending on the examination and local practice, the healthcare professional may check things such as:
❤️ Heart
🫁 Lungs
👶🏽 Abdomen
🦵🏽 Hips
👀 Physical appearance
🧠 General condition
7️⃣ WHAT NEWBORN SCREENING TESTS ARE NEEDED? 🧪
Some conditions may not cause obvious symptoms immediately after birth.
Ask your healthcare team:
“What newborn screening tests does my baby need, and when will they be done?”
The exact tests and timing depend on where you live.
❤️ MAMA, YOU DON'T HAVE TO KNOW EVERYTHING
You have just given birth.
You are recovering, learning your baby and probably feeling a hundred emotions at once. 🥹
Your healthcare team is there to care for both of you.
But asking:
“Has my baby been checked?”
“What tests has my baby had?”
“What happens next?”
is completely reasonable.
📌 SAVE THIS POST so you can refer back to it after delivery.
And send it to an expectant mama who is preparing for her baby's arrival. ❤️

WHY DOES YOUR BABY SOMETIMES KICK MORE AFTER YOU EAT OR HEAR MUSIC?
Have you ever eaten something, sat down… and suddenly your baby started doing gymnastics? 😂👶🏽
You’re not imagining the movement.
But there’s something important every pregnant mama should know. ❤️
Here are some reasons you may notice your baby's movements more after food, music or when you finally sit down:
1️⃣ AFTER YOU EAT 🍲
After a meal, changes in your blood glucose and your body's metabolism can coincide with periods when your baby is more active.
But don't assume that eating a particular food will reliably make your baby move.
2️⃣ YOU'RE FINALLY RESTING 🛌
This is one of the biggest reasons you may suddenly notice those kicks.
When you're walking around, working or doing chores, you may simply not notice every movement.
When you sit or lie down quietly, your baby's movements can become much easier to feel.
3️⃣ MUSIC AND SOUNDS 🎵
Later in pregnancy, your baby's hearing develops and they can respond to sounds.
Some babies may move when exposed to sound, while others may show little or no noticeable response.
Every baby is different.
4️⃣ YOUR BABY HAS SLEEP AND WAKE PERIODS 😴👶🏽
Babies in the womb don't move continuously.
They have periods of activity and rest.
So sometimes the timing of increased movement after eating or resting may simply coincide with your baby's normal active period.
5️⃣ YOUR BABY'S MOVEMENT PATTERN MATTERS MOST ❤️
Don't use food, sugary drinks or music as a way to “wake up” your baby and check whether everything is okay.
Instead, learn what is normal for YOUR baby.
🚨 If your baby's movements become noticeably less than usual, stop or change significantly from their normal pattern, don't wait for food or music to make the baby move.
Contact your maternity team promptly for advice.
Reduced fetal movement can sometimes be a sign that your baby needs assessment.
❤️ MAMA, REMEMBER:
There is no magic food or song that guarantees your baby will kick.
Some babies are very active.
Some are quieter.
What matters is knowing your baby's usual movement pattern and taking a change seriously.
📌 SAVE THIS POST if you're pregnant.
And send it to another mama who watches her belly jump every time she eats! 😂🤰🏽
MAMA, WHEN DOES YOUR BABY SEEM MOST ACTIVE — AFTER FOOD, AT NIGHT, OR WHEN YOU LIE DOWN? 👇🏽❤️

YOU’VE REACHED 10 CM… BUT WHY ISN’T THE BABY HERE YET? 🤰🏽👶🏽
Many first-time mothers think that reaching 10 cm means the baby is coming out immediately.
Not necessarily. ❤️
10 cm means your cervix is fully dilated.
Your body has reached the point where the baby can move through the birth canal — but there may still be several important steps before your baby is born. 👇🏽
1️⃣ 10 CM = FULL DILATION
The cervix has opened to approximately 10 cm, creating enough space for the baby to pass through.
But this does not automatically mean the baby will be born immediately.
2️⃣ YOUR BABY MOVES DOWN ⬇️
The baby's head continues to descend through the pelvis.
How quickly this happens varies greatly between women — and even between different births for the same woman.
3️⃣ PUSHING BEGINS 💪🏽
Once you are fully dilated, your baby's position and descent are assessed.
You may feel a powerful urge to push.
Your midwife or doctor will guide you on when and how to push based on your individual situation.
4️⃣ THE BABY'S HEAD STARTS TO APPEAR 👀
As the baby's head moves lower, you may eventually see the top of the head at the vaginal opening during contractions.
Then it may disappear slightly between contractions.
5️⃣ THEN COMES CROWNING 🔥
Crowning happens when the baby's head remains visible at the vaginal opening as it is being born.
You may feel intense pressure, stretching, burning or stinging around the vaginal opening and perineum.
6️⃣ THE HEAD IS BORN… THEN THE BODY 👶🏽❤️
Once the baby's head is delivered, the shoulders and the rest of the body usually follow with subsequent contractions and pushes.
And suddenly…
YOUR BABY IS HERE! 🥹❤️
🚨 BUT REMEMBER THIS, MAMA:
10 cm does NOT mean “baby out in 5 minutes.”
The length of the pushing stage can vary considerably.
Factors such as:
👶🏽 Baby's position
⬇️ How far the baby has descended
💪🏽 Strength and pattern of contractions
🤰🏽 Whether you have given birth before
💉 Pain relief and other circumstances
can all affect how long the second stage lasts.
So don't panic if you reach 10 cm and your baby isn't immediately born.
Every labour has its own pace. ❤️
📌 SAVE THIS if you're pregnant.
And send it to a mama who thinks “10 cm = baby immediately.” 👇🏽

“YOUR BABY HAS A CLEFT PALATE.” — DOES THAT MEAN YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG? 💔👶🏽
NO, MAMA. A CLEFT PALATE IS NOT PROOF THAT YOU FAILED YOUR BABY. ❤️
One of the most painful things a mother can experience is being blamed for something she may have had no control over.
Let’s clear up some important facts about cleft palate. 👇🏽
1️⃣ IT IS USUALLY NOT THE MOTHER'S FAULT
A cleft palate occurs when the tissues that form the roof of the baby's mouth do not join completely during early development.
In many cases, the exact cause is unknown.
So please don't automatically blame the mother.
2️⃣ IT HAPPENS VERY EARLY IN PREGNANCY 🗓️
The structures of the baby's lip and palate develop during the early weeks of pregnancy.
This can happen before a woman even realises she is pregnant.
3️⃣ GENETICS CAN PLAY A ROLE 🧬
Some clefts are associated with genetic factors or certain genetic conditions.
A family history of cleft lip or palate can also increase the likelihood in some families.
4️⃣ SOME FACTORS MAY INCREASE RISK
Certain factors have been associated with an increased risk, including:
💊 Some medications
🚬 Smoking
🍷 Alcohol exposure
🩺 Poorly controlled diabetes
🥦 Certain nutritional deficiencies
But here's the important part:
An association does NOT mean a mother caused the condition.
Pregnancy is complicated, and the causes of cleft palate can involve multiple genetic and environmental factors.
5️⃣ CAN IT ALWAYS BE PREVENTED?
No.
There is no guaranteed way to prevent every cleft palate.
However, women planning pregnancy can support healthy development by:
✅ Taking folic acid as recommended
✅ Avoiding alcohol and smoking
✅ Managing existing medical conditions
✅ Reviewing medications with a healthcare professional
✅ Attending antenatal care
6️⃣ PLEASE STOP BLAMING MOTHERS ❤️
A mother can:
🥗 Eat well
💊 Take her recommended prenatal supplements
🏥 Attend antenatal appointments
❤️ Do everything she believes is right...
…and still have a baby born with a cleft palate.
Sometimes there is simply no clear explanation.
What matters now is early assessment, appropriate treatment and support for the baby and family.
Cleft palate is a medical condition — not evidence that a mother failed her baby. ❤️
And if someone has ever blamed a mother for her baby's cleft palate, please share this with them.
MAMAS, DID YOU KNOW THAT A CLEFT PALATE CAN OCCUR WITHOUT A CLEAR CAUSE? 👇🏽

LABOUR HAS STARTED? 5 THINGS YOU SHOULD NOT DO 🤰🏽👶🏽
Mama, when those contractions begin, your first instinct may be: “What can I do to make this baby come faster?”
Take a breath. ❤️
Labour is a process, and trying to rush it can sometimes make things more difficult or unsafe.
Here are 5 things you should avoid when you think labour has started: 👇🏽
1️⃣ DON'T START PUSHING TOO EARLY
Feeling pressure or having the urge to push does not always mean it is time to push.
If you are not yet fully dilated, pushing can contribute to swelling of the cervix and may make pushing more difficult.
Follow the guidance of your midwife or doctor.
2️⃣ DON'T PANIC
Yes, labour can be frightening — especially if it is your first baby.
But try to take it one contraction at a time.
Slow, controlled breathing, relaxation and support from your birth companion can help you cope with each contraction.
3️⃣ DON'T EAT A VERY HEAVY MEAL 🍛
Labour can cause nausea and vomiting.
Whether you can eat or drink during labour depends on your individual circumstances and your hospital's policy.
Follow the advice of your maternity team, particularly if there is a possibility you may need an urgent procedure.
4️⃣ DON'T TAKE HERBS OR MEDICATIONS TO “SPEED UP” LABOUR 🌿🚫
Please don't take labour-inducing medicines, herbs or homemade mixtures simply because someone says they will make the baby come faster.
Some substances can cause excessively strong contractions or create risks for both mother and baby.
Only use medicines recommended by your healthcare professional.
5️⃣ DON'T IGNORE WARNING SIGNS 🚨
Don't simply stay at home hoping everything will be fine if you notice concerning symptoms.
Contact your maternity team or seek urgent assessment if you have:
🩸 Vaginal bleeding
💧 Your waters break
👶🏽 Reduced or changed baby movements
⚡ Severe or unusual pain
🤰🏽 Regular, increasingly strong contractions
🚨 Or if you are under 37 weeks pregnant and think you may be in labour
Your maternity team can tell you when you should come to hospital based on your individual situation.
❤️ REMEMBER, MAMA:
You don't have to force your baby to come faster.
Your body and your baby are going through an important process.
Stay as calm as you can, follow your birth plan where appropriate, listen to your healthcare team and seek help when something doesn't feel right.
SAVE THIS POST 📌
And send it to a pregnant mama who may need to see this before labour begins. ❤️
