Watch: Stakeholders share reflections during the handover of the Cold Chain Equipment Management System to the Government of Tanzania through the Ministry of Health's Immunization and Vaccine Development (IVD) program and the Prime Minister's Office - Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG).

Implemented through the Rapid Response & Repair (R3) Project, led by Nexleaf Analytics through Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, in partnership with inSupply Health, the project strengthened the management of cold chain equipment through the development and national rollout of a digital CCE module integrated into the government-owned Medical Equipment and Infrastructure Management Information System (MEIMIS). The system reached 26 regions, 184 councils, and more than 9,000 health workers in Tanzania mainland

The handover is a step towards institutionalizing the system and sustaining its use to support timely maintenance, better use of data, and a stronger immunization supply chain.

Matiko Machagge, inSupply Country Director, Tanzania and Deusdedith James Senior Analyst, participated in the 2nd International Primary Health Care Conference (IPHC 2026), joining health sector leaders, practitioners, researchers and partners to share experiences and discuss what it will take to strengthen primary healthcare.

Our participation focused on a key part of that conversation: how digital and data-driven solutions can strengthen health commodity supply chains.

We presented two innovations: the Bottom-Up Quantification Validation and Aggregation Tool and our work on Digital Cold Chain Equipment Management, demonstrating how better use of data and technology can improve planning, visibility and decision-making.

We also heard from Tanga City Hospital, one of the facilities implementing the IMPACT approach with support from inSupply Health. Their experience highlighted improvements in key supply chain performance indicators and data quality during implementation demonstrating how strengthening routine data use and empowering facility teams can translate into measurable improvements in supply chain performance at the last mile.

Key message from the conference was that digitization should make health systems work better for the people who use them. This means moving beyond data collection to putting timely, accurate and actionable data in the hands of frontline teams to support better decisions and, ultimately, better care.

At inSupply Health, our April 2026 Cohort III interns are gaining hands-on experience while bringing their skills, perspectives and ideas to work across health systems, supply chains, digital transformation, capacity building and data use.

For William Joseph Mtebe, a Licensed Pharmacist from CT University, India, the internship has been an opportunity to look beyond the clinical setting and explore how his pharmaceutical background can contribute to stronger health systems.

William has contributed to developing training micro-modules, supporting healthcare workers to use digital tools and maintain equipment, and developing performance-tracking frameworks to strengthen data-driven decision-making.

Through these experiences, he is building a deeper understanding of how pharmaceutical expertise, supply chain management, digital solutions and data come together to address complex challenges in global health.

Kenya’s 7,500+ pharmacies represent an untapped opportunity to expand access to family planning, reproductive health and primary healthcare.

Speaking at the Market Test Learning & Exit Summit, our CEO Yasmin Chandani highlighted the need to invest in pharmacies and strengthen their role in reaching communities with essential health services.

These conversations build on five years of work to strengthen pharmacy-led family planning, including training 700+ pharmacy providers across 12 counties, with 490 accredited and 40 certified trainers of trainers.

What does it take to make family planning services available beyond the health facility?

Kenya’s Training Package for Provision of Quality Integrated Family Planning Services was developed to equip pharmacists and pharmaceutical technologists with the knowledge and skills to provide integrated FP services, including injectable contraceptives and referrals for long-term methods.

Through our projects, we have seen what this can look like in practice. Community pharmacies can offer clients greater access, choice, and convenience when the right support and systems are in place.

The training package is one of the foundations for building that capacity, strengthening provider skills, integrating FP into routine pharmacy practice, and supporting quality service delivery.

One year into the implementation of Delivering Innovations in Self-Care (DISC), inSupply Health brought together county, sub-county and facility teams in Nakuru and Nairobi for annual performance reviews and cross-learning sessions to reflect on progress, share lessons, identify gaps and strengthen county ownership.

In Nakuru, 177 providers across 148 public facilities have been trained, alongside Community Health Assistants and Youth Champions supporting demand generation and referrals. Encouragingly, 62% of DMPA-SC visits are now self-injected, with approximately 25,000 self-injection visits recorded as of July 2026.

In Nairobi, frontline providers shared practical experiences on improving service uptake, highlighting the importance of provider confidence, empathy and quality counselling. One reflection from the County RH captured the essence of client-centred care: “𝗪𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴.”

Beyond the numbers, the sessions created space to learn from what is working, recognize frontline teams, openly address challenges and translate lessons into practical action.

Huge thanks to the County Departments of Health, sub-county teams, facility staff, community health assistants, and youth champions driving this work forward.

As we look ahead, the focus remains on learning from what works, addressing gaps and strengthening sustainable, locally owned approaches that can continue beyond the project.
