🎙️🎧 PODCAST RECOMMENDATIONS 🏋️ : It's been a little while since I did one of my regular podcast recommendation posts. However, there have been a few good episodes recently that I thought were worth a share. If you find these useful, please save them to your collections for later, and I'll keep doing them.
The first is part of The Mind Muscle Project's women's month. Whilst the second is a very practical episode which will be of interest to anybody with a passion for health and fitness.
The last two are a little more technical and might be of more interest to coaches or anybody who loves getting into the details of this stuff.
1️⃣ - DR STACY SIMS ON HARMFUL PRACTICES IN WOMEN'S SPORT [719 of The Mind Muscle Project| Interview 308] - This discussion goes far beyond highlighting some of the shameful systematic practises found in elite women's sport. It's an all-encompassing conversation on woman's health as it relates to training. Notably, the importance of HEAVY resistance training and HIT for women as they approach and go through menopause. []
2️⃣ - TIPS AND METHODS TO FIX IMBALANCES & DEVELOPING SPECIFIC BODY PARTS [The Mind Muscle Project Podcast e.p 717] - This a very practical episode which helps to build a fundamental understanding of how to address imbalances which, left addressed, will lead to injury.
3️⃣ - ALL ABOUT THE FOOT - The foot is often neglected, but a healthy and robust foot is fundamental to a healthy and robust body. Most people will wrap there feet up in tight, supportive shoes, but should we be letting them free? Or will that create more harm than good? What about flat feet and orthotics? Is there ever a time when they are appropriate? Where does conventional understanding go so wrong? This is a fascinating episode which will answer all of your questions about the feet as it applies to heavy lifting and an active lifestyle. [The NASM-CPT Podcast With Rick Richey talking to Dr. Emily Splichal]
4️⃣ - CORE STABILITY, BACK PAIN REHAB & BAD RESEARCH with Dr. Andrew Lock [ ].
👉 Remember to save this to your collections so that you can find it later.

Those back 10 years to where it all began - and a 'baby-face' I, bought a couple of wartime soviet motorbikes and set off on the 2,000km ride from Hanoi to Hochiminh city in Vietnam. Here are a few highlights of the trip:
1️⃣ We had to learn to ride a manual clutch after we bought the bike.
2️⃣ I think I had my first crash on a patch of wet mud on our first day, and they were regular occurrence after that.
3️⃣ One of our first nights, we stopped in a small village, and the only thing they served was dog meat. That was better than the nights, where the only thing we could find was instant noodles.
4️⃣ This was before smartphones and google maps, so we had to make do with a road atlas and a compass (I actually miss this).
5️⃣The route was stunning and very mountainous! Some times our old engines would cut out on the climbs (and the headlights with it).
6️⃣ On a bit of rough track, my suspension broke off. Luckily, someone was able to make a replacement spring by bending a metal rod!
I had travelled before this, but when I look back on it, this trip was a fundamental point in my life. It changed the way I approached travel, and it definitely gave me the momentum to get my motorbike licence when I got back to the UK. 🏍️
I remember a clear realisation which we discussed together at the end of the trip. That, even with everything that had gone wrong: the cashes, the brake-downs, the full day we wasted looking for a bridge over a river which was actually a little ferry boat, it was these 'disasters' which made the memories. It was how we dealt with them that made the experience special.
'Live free, change nothing' - it's the only way! 😊

Throwback to one of my most special travelling memories, long before the project was even a seed of an idea.
I arrived in Battambong, Cambodia, mid-afternoon. The city had lifely bustle about it, and from what I could see, zero tourists. It was precisely what I had hoped. I had been travelling with a mate; however, he left the day before to retake some exams. So, in the absence of any plans decided to get well off the beaten track.
I had read about a small shelter ran by a single monk inside a Buddhist wat. The shelter provided a safe place for children whose parents were struggling to support them, and uniquely it had rejected large international handouts in order to stay true to its values. I was to learn that it was a large family, where the older children cared for, the younger ones, and where the spirit of love was infectious.
Without notice or pre-arranging anything, I was dropped off and nervously walked inside. Suddenly I was very aware that if I wasn't received well, I had no way of getting back to the city. Thankfully when I asked if I could help, I was graciously welcomed and told that as the kids were on their school holidays, it would be great if I could spend some time helping them with their English.
I slept soundly on a mat on the floor in the classroom, and each day went exploring with the kids. 💤
🚴‍♂️🦀🐌🐍One particular day, we rode bicycles around the rice paddies, looking for snails, crabs and snakes in the waterways. There is something magical about foraging and hunting for your foods, but this was something else.
I travelled a lot in my twenties, and I was used to having incredible experiences like this one. However, years later, when I fell in love with fitness, I came to accept that I would never be able to travel like this again. And that was fine until it wasn't. 🏋️
👉 In the end, I started the Fitpacklife.com (link in bio), to help people travel without having to compromise on their training. Sure if you want to spend a month deep in the Amazon, you may need to change up your training a bit, but once you have the information, you are in control. @ Battambong

🇬🇧Training in the beautiful countryside of Jardin was incredible, but after four months in lockdown, it feels so good to be training with other people again.
I first met Jorge back in 2016. He is a coach at in Envigado, (check them out on fitpaklife.com, link in bio), and at the time I was slightly overweight and clueless. I think i remember Jorge trying to get me to squat in my wall balls, and me trying to make excuses for why I couldn't.
I've been to some great gyms on the , but without the great experience at Soy Hakuna back in 2016, I think I my life would be very different today.
So even though the gyms are still closed here in Colombia, it was great to train with Jorge this morning on the roof of my new apartment.
👉 If you are looking for a weightlifting coach, and want to brush up on your Spanish at the same time, drop Jorge a message ( .1 ).

🔖"The only thing special about the elements that make you is that they make you. That is the miracle of life."
In total, "Fifty-nine elements are needed to construct a human being. Six of these – carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus – account for 99.1 per cent of what makes us, but much of the rest is a bit unexpected".. "The biggest component in any human, filling 61 per cent of available space, is oxygen. It may seem a touch counterintuitive that we are almost two-thirds composed of an odourless gas. The reason we are not light and bouncy like a balloon is that the oxygen is mostly bound up with hydrogen (which accounts for another 10 per cent of you), to make water.".. "It is a little ironic that two of the lightest things in nature, oxygen and hydrogen, when combined form one of the heaviest."
A few snippets from the start of "The Body, by Bill Bryson". There is something some magnificent about life. All at the same time, it's so simple, yet so complex.

TRANSFORMATION TUESDAY - Sometimes it's good to remind yourself where you started your journey. It's crazy looking back at these photos.
👉 I've always done things in extremes, and at this point in my life, I was pretty big into drinking and parting. It was fun, and there isn't much I would change if I could go back. Except, I would educate myself on fitness or nutrition. Or, even better, find a fitness community like the one I eventually found at .
👉 At the time this photo was taken, I was training 3 hours a day after college. But I was clueless! I think most of my training was on cardio machines, and I would often eat a whole french baguette with a packet of pate for lunch, washing it down with a carton of orange juice. It seems crazy now, but I thought that was good for me.
👉 I travel the whole of South America, keeping fit and eating well. Follow now to see how I do it. I also write travel fitness blogs on my website www.fitpacklife.com

🎙️🎧 PODCAST RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK
👉 Remember that you can save this post to your collections using the ribbon beneath the photo. With the dots at the top right of the photo, turn on notifications so that you don't miss them next week.
It's a small list this week. With everything that has been going on, I didn't listen to many health and fitness podcasts last week.
'
1️⃣ - MUSCLE STRENGTH Vs MUSCLE GROWTH - The basics. 💪
This is a great little episode which sets out the difference between training for muscle strength and growth out in simple terms. If you are somebody who is starting to program for yourself, either while you are in lockdown, or because you are planning to start travelling once lockdown ends, then this is well worth a listen. [ ]
2️⃣ - UNDERSTANDING THE METABOLIC APPROACH TO CANCER with Dr. Nasha Winters. 👩‍⚕️👨🏻‍⚕️👩‍🔬This episode, which could also have been called 'how to manage your nutrition and training to avoid chronic illness', is packed full of excellent information. A large proportion of this episode is devoted to addressing popular nutrition trends, and how they may or may not protect against chronic diseases such as cancer. This is an approach to cancer treatment which is contrary to the standard of care, so you may want to do some further research before you start questioning doctors.
However, I found it fascinating, enlightening, and in parts, a little worrying. Some of the language is slightly technical, but if you are familiar with terms such as 'Epigenetics', 'Metabolic flexibility', and 'fasting', you will find this a value-packed and engaging episode. [Check it out on the with ]
3️⃣ - THIS ONE IS FOR CROSSFITTERS - And it's more heartbreaking news. At the end of last week, I noticed a further flurry of athletes withdrawing from the games. They referenced an obscurely named podcast on youtube: 'Full Auto Friday - Round 5'. Within it is some seriously damming revelations on Greg. I think it's vitally anybody engaged in the community must watch this video so that as a community, we make the correct decisions over our leadership.

THE AMOUNT OF FUN YOU GET FROM COOKING IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO HOW SHARP YOU KNIVES ARE. - It's probably more like an S curve with a plateau at the top and bottom.
I am far more likely to cook when I have what I need to make it an enjoyable experience.
That's why I always travel with a sharp knife and a selection of my favourite spices.
Later today, join me for an IG Live when I'll be making some Kimchi, fermenting garlic, and talking you through what I travel with to keep my diet clean on the road. I may even touch on my thoughts on the future of CrossFit globally.
GOING LIVE AT 8PM BST (2pm in Colombia)

"🎙️🎧 PODCAST RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK
👉 Remember that you can save this post to your collections using the ribbon beneath the photo. With the dots at the top right of the photo, turn on notifications so that you don't miss them next week.
1️⃣ - ELIJAH MUHAMMAD, (Crossfit Games Athlete), LENDS HIS PERSPECTIVE ON . A heartfelt, emotional and powerful episode which I implore you to listen to given the activities of this week.
2️⃣ - THE THERAPEUTIC POWER OF AYAHUASCA - Ayahuasca has incredible therapeutic benefits. In recent years, the ancient medicine has expanded in popularity beyond indigenous communities, towards the mainstream. However, there is a lot to be aware of before you take your first drink.
In this episode talks with a Kat Courtney, a woman who trained for ten years to be able to pour the medicine. They discuss; the importance of finding the right healer, the limitations of Ayahuasca, and the importance of dedicating time after the ceremony to put your new knowledge into practice. [Brains Byte Back Podcast]
3️⃣ - THE TEN BIGGEST STRENGTH TRAINING MISTAKES. In this episode, break down some common programming mistakes which might limit your progress. Particularly relevant if you are looking to programme for yourself as you travel the world.
4️⃣ - STEFFI COHEN AND FRIENDS DISCUSS BEING WOMEN IN THE FITNESS INDUSTRY TODAY, and the pressures of social media. Parts of this discussion were surprisingly insightful. Even though the views they were raising seemed to be aligned with the ideals of 'feminism', all three women had objections to labelling themselves feminist. I will let you make your own minds up about what this means.

"Fermented foods. I love them! But why? ✨ We know that they are supposed to be healthy ✨. A quick google will reveal that incorporating some fermented foods into your diet can have a wide range of benefits.
👉 These include: maintaining a healthy gut, boosting your immune system, better nutrient absorption, and even help to regulated social anxiety. However, I am yet to find any robust research which supports any of this.
👉That said, gut health is so fundamental that if you can improve your microbiome, improvements in your immune system, nutrient absorption, and even mental health will follow. We are just not sure the extent to which the fermentation process supports a healthy gut.
👉In fact, a lot of the other touted benefits, like increased fibre, and vitamin content relate to the ingredients and seem unaltered by the fermentation process.
With that in mind, why am I such a fan?
1️⃣ - CREATIVITY ⇝ Experimenting with different recipes is fun, and a novel way to express creativity. If we don't use our creativity regularly, we might lose this ability as we age. If you are interested in learning more about neurology, check out .blog. Sometimes recipes can seem a little daunting, but you can't go too wrong. I never follow a recipe, and unlike baking, it's not an exact science.
2️⃣ - FOR THOSE LAZY DAYS ⇝ If I haven't got the time or energy to cook, having a jar of tasty fermented Kimchi on hand is a convenient way to ensure that each meal includes the micronutrients I need.
3️⃣ - HEALTHIEST NATURAL PRESERVATIVE ⇝ Even natural chilli sources will use sugar, heavily processed oils, or if you are lucky, vinegar, as preservatives to extend their shelf life. However, fermenting chilis for a couple of weeks negates the need for any of these. I have a couple of batches with mango on the go at the moment.
4️⃣ - NO NEED FOR A FRIDGE ⇝ If you are going on a hike, a camp, or a long motorbike ride, the fermentation process is one way to have vegetables with you without having to worry about keeping them chilled.
5️⃣ - SAVORY, ALCOHOL-FREE DRINK ⇝ I make a fruit, water kefir drink which only takes one day to ferment."
