My child has a runny nose and cough. Do I need antibiotics?
In general, children with a runny nose, cough, or cold do not need antibiotics because most of these symptoms are caused by viruses, while antibiotics are only effective against bacteria.
Using antibiotics unnecessarily can:
- Increase the risk of antibiotic resistance
- Cause side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, or drug allergies
- Make it harder to treat a bacterial infection later.
When should I take my child to the doctor right away?
Please bring your child to see a doctor if they have any of the following symptoms:
- High fever (over 38.5°C) or a fever that doesn't go away for a long time
- Severe or worsening cough
- Difficulty breathing or breathing unusually fast
- Pulling in the ribs(chest retraction) when breathing
- Bluish lips or very pale skin
- Not drinking much, not eating much, or showing signs of dehydration
- Very sleepy, not playing much, or having trouble waking up.
Do not self-medicate with antibiotics.
A doctor's examination will help determine whether your child needs antibiotics.

Is a child coughing a lot at night? Is it normal or should I be concerned?

A cough at night can be caused by a cold or a mild respiratory infection and will usually go away on its own. However, parents should take their child to the doctor if they have any of the following symptoms:

• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Tightness (retractions)in the chest or a flaring of the nostrils when breathing
• Wheezing or unusually loud breathing
• Bluish lips or face
• Fever over 38.5°C or a persistent fever
• Coughing until vomiting or unable to sleep
• Drinking or breastfeeding less, not eating much
• Lethargy, lack of activity or weakness
• Coughing for more than 2 weeks

Take your child to the emergency room if your child has severe difficulty breathing, has purple lips or is very lethargic.

For babies under 3 months old
Even if the cough is mild, if the cough lasts more than 2–3 days or if parents are concerned, you should take your child to the doctor for a more thorough evaluation.
Important message: Babies under 3 months old should not self-medicate with cough suppressants unless directed by a doctor.
