Tennis Elbow or Golfer’s Elbow? Know the Difference

Elbow pain does not only affect athletes. Repetitive activities such as using a computer mouse, cooking, cleaning, lifting heavy objects, or frequently bending the wrist can gradually place stress on the tendons around the elbow.

Tennis Elbow usually causes pain on the outside of the elbow. The pain may worsen when lifting objects, extending the wrist, using a mouse, or holding a frying pan.

Golfer’s Elbow usually causes pain on the inside of the elbow. Symptoms may become more noticeable when bending the wrist, gripping an object, opening a bottle cap, or using chopsticks.

When the tendons are repeatedly strained before they have fully recovered, small injuries may accumulate and lead to chronic inflammation, tendon degeneration, or even a partial tear.

Treatment may include rest, activity modification, medication, injections, manual therapy, and shockwave therapy. When pain continues or significant tendon damage is identified, surgical treatment may also be considered. In selected cases requiring highly precise treatment, robot-assisted surgery may be considered following a detailed examination and specialist evaluation.

Do not ignore persistent elbow pain. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help prevent symptoms from becoming chronic and support a safer return to daily activities.

Summer Gastroenteritis vs. Food Poisoning

**How can you tell the difference?**

During the summer, more people experience abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. Although gastroenteritis and food poisoning may cause similar symptoms, their causes and treatment may differ.

**Gastroenteritis** is inflammation of the stomach and intestines caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites. It may spread through contaminated food or water, as well as through contact with an infected person.

**Food poisoning** occurs after consuming food or drinks contaminated with bacteria, viruses, or toxins. It can be considered one possible cause of gastroenteritis.

Typical patterns may include:

• Viral gastroenteritis: Person-to-person spread and watery diarrhea
• Bacterial gastroenteritis: More common during summer, with possible bloody stool
• Toxin-mediated food poisoning: Short incubation period, with vomiting often occurring first

However, it is often difficult to identify the exact cause based on symptoms alone.

The most important part of treatment is preventing dehydration. Mild cases may improve with adequate fluid intake, electrolyte replacement, rest, and easy-to-digest foods such as rice gruel or porridge. When vomiting or diarrhea is severe, IV fluid therapy may be needed.

Antibiotics are not required in every case, and anti-diarrheal medicines should be used carefully depending on the cause and symptoms.

**Please seek medical care if you experience:**

• A persistent fever of 38.5°C or higher
• Bloody or mucus-containing stool
• Severe vomiting that makes it difficult to drink fluids
• Repeated diarrhea with signs of dehydration
• Abdominal pain that continues to worsen
