Can AI really "understand" autism spectrum disorder — or is it just guessing right? 🧠

Most AI diagnostic models are built to maximize prediction accuracy, but accuracy alone doesn't confirm whether the model has actually learned biologically meaningful patterns in the brain.

An international research team led by Seoul National University Hospital has proposed a new evaluation framework — Generative Manifold Auditing (GMA) — to test how sensitively an AI model's internal representations respond to structural changes in brain networks, rather than relying on prediction accuracy alone.

Applying this framework to large-scale datasets and SNUH's long-term clinical cohort, the team found that even when children's clinical symptoms improved, the underlying changes in brain network connectivity varied by individual and by brain region — suggesting that behavioral improvement doesn't always tell the full biological story.

The findings were presented at ACM SIGKDD 2026, a leading global conference in AI and data mining, under its newly launched "AI for Science" track.

화재와 재난 현장에서 국민의 생명을 지켜온 소방공무원들. 하지만 정작 이들의 직무 특성에 맞는 전문 의료체계는 충분히 갖춰지지 못했습니다.

지난 11일, 이러한 공백을 메우기 위한 국립소방병원이 문을 열었습니다. 소방청이 설립하고 서울대학교병원이 위탁 운영을 맡은 이 병원은 충북 음성군 충북혁신도시에 위치하며, 302병상·19개 진료과 규모로 운영됩니다.

이날 개원식에는 이재명 대통령이 참석해 기념사를 전했으며, 이후 고압산소치료실을 둘러보고 소방공무원 환자를 격려했습니다.

병원은 화상·통합재활·정신건강·건강증진 4대 특성화센터를 중심으로 소방공무원의 예방·치료·재활을 아우르는 의료서비스를 제공하며, 소방의학연구소를 통해 직업성 질환과 재난 손상 연구도 함께 수행할 계획입니다. 또한 지역응급의료센터를 기반으로 119 구급 이송과 중증응급환자 대응은 물론, 지역주민을 위한 필수·응급의료 역할도 함께 맡습니다.

백남종 서울대학교병원장은 "국립소방병원은 국민의 생명과 안전을 지켜온 소방공무원에게 국가가 의료로 응답하는 뜻깊은 결실"이라고 말했습니다.

서울대학교병원은 국가중앙병원으로서 쌓아온 진료·연구·공공의료 경험을 바탕으로 국립소방병원의 운영을 지원하며, 소방의학 분야의 전문성을 함께 키워나갈 계획입니다.

Firefighters stand on the front lines of fires and disasters, protecting the public — yet a medical system tailored to the specific occupational risks they face has long been lacking.

On August 11, the National Fire Hospital opened to help fill that gap. Established by the National Fire Agency and operated by Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH), the hospital is located in the Chungbuk Innovation City in Eumseong County, Chungcheongbuk-do, and operates with 302 beds across 19 clinical departments.

President Lee Jae Myung attended the opening ceremony and delivered a commemorative address, then toured the hyperbaric oxygen therapy room and encouraged firefighter patients.

The hospital provides prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services centered on four specialized centers — burns, integrated rehabilitation, mental health, and health promotion — and its Fire Service Medicine Research Institute will study occupational diseases and disaster-related injuries. Based on its regional emergency medical center, the hospital also handles 119 ambulance transports and severe emergency cases, while providing essential and emergency care to local residents in central Chungcheongbuk-do.

SNUH President Nam Jong Paik said the hospital represents "a meaningful achievement in which the state responds with medical care to the firefighters who have protected the lives and safety of the public"

서울대병원 연구팀이 국내 성인 49만 명을 최장 14년간 추적 관찰한 결과를 발표했습니다.

Millions of people take choline alfoscerate for memory and cognitive decline — but does it affect kidney health? 🧠

A new Seoul National University Hospital study set out to find out. Researchers followed nearly 490,000 Korean adults for up to 14 years, comparing those who took the drug with those who didn't.

The result: kidney cancer rates were virtually identical between the two groups — no increased risk from taking the medication. Interestingly though, the drug didn't lower kidney cancer risk either, unlike dietary choline (from foods like eggs), which some earlier studies linked to a protective effect.

In short: choline alfoscerate appears safe when it comes to kidney cancer, but it shouldn't be taken with the expectation of preventing it.

The study, led by researchers at Seoul National University Hospital, was published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology.

For the 11th consecutive year, Seoul National University Hospital has been ranked No. 1 among general hospitals in Korea's National Brand Competitiveness Index (NBCI) — a title we've also held for 26 straight years in the K-BPI brand power survey.

This year's recognition reflects real progress across the board. We expanded our surgical infrastructure with 11 new operating rooms and completed Korea's first robotic lung transplant. Our new Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Critical Care Center now serves as a nationwide referral hub for high-risk mothers and newborns.

On the innovation front, we launched SNUH POLARIS, an AI-powered clinical decision support system integrating pathology, diagnostics, genomics, and surgical data — alongside KMed.AI, developed with Naver, and our new medical AI agent platform, SNUH.AI.

Globally, we opened an overseas hub in Boston and deepened research collaborations with Harvard Medical School, MIT, and Stanford, reinforcing our role as a designated national strategic technology institute in biotech and digital health data.

김지원 배우의 서울대학교어린이병원 후원 소식을 전해드립니다 🥰

Actress Kim Ji-won has donated 100 million KRW to Seoul National University Children's Hospital, supporting treatment costs for children battling rare and severe illnesses and helping fund the renovation of aging hospital wards.

The gift was inspired by her time filming the drama 'Doctor X,' during which she came into close contact with stories of dedicated medical staff and the struggles faced by young patients and their families.

Since opening in 1985 as Asia's first dedicated children's hospital, Seoul National University Children's Hospital has spent nearly four decades caring for children who travel from across the country for treatment of rare and complex conditions — many requiring repeated surgeries and long-term care that place a heavy financial and emotional burden on families.
