For some young people and adults, self-harm can become a way of coping with feelings that seem impossible to express or manage.

It may be difficult for families to understand and frightening to discover, but anger, punishment and shame rarely help.

What matters is responding calmly, listening without judgement and helping the person find safer ways to manage their distress.

Self-harm does not always mean that someone wants to end their life, but it should always be taken seriously.

Confidential psychotherapy can help individuals understand what lies beneath the behaviour, develop safer coping strategies and begin to communicate what they are experiencing.

There are some moments that remind you just how much can be achieved when a community comes together.

I was incredibly proud to volunteer at the opening of Autism Acceptance’s wonderful new space. It was a privilege to celebrate this exciting milestone alongside so many passionate families, professionals and supporters who are working to create a more inclusive Cayman Islands.

Having a dedicated space like this represents so much more than a building. It creates opportunities for connection, understanding and belonging for autistic individuals and their families.

Thank you to everyone at Autism Acceptance for the dedication, vision and hard work that made this possible. I’m honoured to play a small part in supporting the incredible work you do, and I can’t wait to see all the lives that will be positively impacted in the years ahead.

What does it really mean to be an intentional parent?

It’s a phrase that’s becoming more common, but it’s not about striving to be the “perfect” parent. It’s about building strong relationships, responding thoughtfully and creating everyday moments that help children feel safe, understood and supported.
