Our physiotherapists offer manual therapy as one of their treatments. Manual therapy is a “hands on” technique where a therapist uses their hands to manipulate, mobilise and massage the body tissues.

Manual therapy can help:

👉improve blood circulation
👉decrease pain and stiffness
👉improve the mobility of joints, soft tissues and nerves
👉reduce soft tissue inflammation
👉enable fluid to drain more efficiently from parts of the body
👉promote relaxation

Manual therapy can be used to treat a variety of problems, both acute and chronic, such as back pain. It may also be useful for a range of conditions that don’t affect the bones, joints or muscles.

One of the biggest myths of lymphedema, a chronic condition that causes swelling in the tissue of a particular area of the body, is don’t exercise.

But exercise can help increase the lymphatic flow and ease swelling. However, your body’s response to exercise should be monitored. Look for any changes in how you feel - heaviness, aching, fatigue, numbness or tingling. If these occur, ease up on the exercise and consult your health care team.

🏋️‍♀️ Exercise of the Week: Bird Dog

Throughout August we’ll be focusing on core strength, and bringing you some exercises you can do at home to help strengthen your core muscles. This week is the Bird Dog.

What is it?
The Bird Dog is a simple core stability exercise that strengthens your core, hips, and back by engaging certain stabiliser muscles. This can help improve posture, low back pain, balance, and mobility.

Who can benefit?
✔️ People with mild, non-specific low back discomfort*
✔️ Office workers
✔️ Anyone looking to improve core stability, balance or posture

How to do it:
1. Start on your hands and knees.
2. Tighten your core.
3. Draw the shoulder blades together
4. Raise one arm and the opposite leg.
5. Lengthen the back of your neck and tuck your chin into your chest to gaze down at the floor.
6. Hold for 3–5 seconds before switching sides.

Prescription:
• 2–3 sets
• 8–10 reps per side

Form tips:
❌ Avoid arching the lower back
❌ Avoid rotating the hips
✔️Move slowly with control

Physio Tip 💡
Proper form is key: keep your spine neutral, hips level, and shoulders squared while extending opposite arm and leg.

*If this exercise increases your pain or isn’t appropriate for your condition, stop and consult a physiotherapist.

🏋️‍♀️ Exercise of the Week: Glute Bridges

What is it?
Glute bridges are an effective exercise to improve lower body strength, posture, core stability and enhance functional movement. As the name suggests, this versatile exercise primarily targets the gluteal muscles, but also engages the core muscles and hip flexors.

Who can benefit?
✔️ People with mild, non-specific low back discomfort*
✔️ People with poor posture
✔️ Anyone looking to improve core stability or improve hip mobility ✔️ Office workers, or anyone prone to prolonged sitting ✔️ Pregnant women in 2nd trimesters ✔️ People with weak glutes or hip/pelvic muscle imbalances

How to do it:
1. Start in a lying position with knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
2. Tighten your core and ensure your lower back remains neutral.
3. Lift your hips up towards the ceiling, forming a straight line from the shoulders to the knees.
4. Squeeze your glutes at the top of the movement, keeping your core engaged and your hips level.
5. Hold for 2-3 seconds before slowly lowering your hips back to the starting position.

Prescription:
• 8–10 reps

Form tips:
❌ Avoid arching the lower back
✔️ Keep abdominals engaged throughout
✔️ Knees should remain inline with the hips and not flare outward

Physio Tip 💡
* Focus on engaging the glutes rather than pushing through the lower back.
* Place a pillow or a block between your knees and squeeze if this irritates your back.

*If this exercise increases your pain or isn’t appropriate for your condition, stop and consult a physiotherapist.
