PATIENT STORY | For Kim Gardiner, experiencing heart palpitations, chest pains, and knowing her family history of heart disease were clear signals that she needed to check on her heart health.

According to the Cayman Islands’ Compendium of Statistics, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death, accounting for 35.8% of all fatalities in 2024. This is an increase of 8.8% from 2022; therefore, Ms. Gardiner’s concerns were not too trivial to be ignored.

Following her consultation with Health Services Authority’s (HSA) Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Brian Noronha, he recommended Computerised Tomography (CT) Coronary Angiography and Calcium Scoring tests to assess for blockages and calcium buildup. These tests showed an incidental finding of an aortic aneurysm.

URGENT CALL 🩸O-Negative Blood Donors Needed

The Cayman Islands Blood Bank is urgently appealing to members of the public with O-negative blood to donate as soon as possible due to critically low supplies.

To book an appointment, visit bloodbank.ky

O-negative blood is known as the universal donor blood type because it can be given safely to patients of any blood type during emergencies, particularly when there isn't enough time to determine a patient's blood group. It is often used to treat trauma patients, individuals experiencing severe bleeding and others requiring immediate lifesaving transfusions.

The Blood Bank is asking all eligible O-negative donors who are able to give blood to book an appointment as soon as possible to help replenish supplies and ensure this vital resource remains available for patients in need.

Every donation has the potential to save lives and supports patients undergoing emergency treatment, surgery, cancer care, childbirth complications and other medical conditions.

How to donate blood?
Appointments can be booked by visiting bloodbank.ky or by calling the Cayman Islands Blood Bank at 244-2674.
