On Tuesday, UNFPA Lao PDR brought together youth representatives at UNFPA House for a consultation to strengthen coordination and build long-term, sustainable engagement with young people across the country.

The discussion explored young people’s current access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), identified gaps and barriers to accessing essential services and safe spaces, and looked at opportunities to build sustainable partnerships with youth.

The consultation also provided a space to hear directly from young people about their needs and priorities, helping inform and shape projects and approaches for UNFPA Lao PDR’s next Country Programme, while strengthening meaningful youth participation in decision-making.

The consultation reinforces our committed to working alongside young people as partners and leaders in shaping programmes and solutions that respond to their needs and aspirations for our next country programme.

🟠 Combined Oral Contraceptives and Progestin-Only Contraceptive Pills is a temporary family planning method where one birth control pill is taken daily, following the arrows, at the same time each day.
🟠 Consult a doctor before using birth control pills for the first time.
🟠 Where to access: Vientiane Women and Youth Center, District Hospital and Primary Healthcare Center
Pros:
🟠 Can become pregnant again once discontinue birth control pills.
🟠 Combined pills are appropriate for most women.
🟠 Single-hormone birth control pills are suitable for recent mothers as they don't reduce milk supply. It is also suitable for most women
Women can stop these pills at any time to conceive, no medical assistance needed.
Side effect: During the initial period of taking the medication, some individuals may experience dizziness, nausea, mood swings, and irregular menstruation. These symptoms will subside over time.

Following up on last week's introduction to birth control injections, today we will introduce contraceptive implant method.

▶ Implants are small flexible rods that are placed just under the skin of the upper arm. It offers highly effective, long-term pregnancy prevention for up to three years and can be removed immediately if you wish to conceive.
▶ Nearly all women can safely and effectively use contraceptive implants, including those with or without children, unmarried women, and women living with HIV. Exceptions include women with breast cancer, blood clots, or those in the first six weeks postpartum while breastfeeding.
▶ Implant must be inserted by trained health workers or midwives.
👍Pros:
▶ Prevents pregnancy effectively for 3 years.
▶ No follow-up or regular check-ups are required after insertion.
▶ It is an easy and convenient method for women.
▶ Women can have children immediately after removing the implant, without a long wait.
❗️Common side effects include irregular menstruation (too light, too heavy, too frequent, too infrequent, or absent), headache, abdominal pain, acne, weight changes, breast tenderness, dizziness, mood changes, or nausea.
