Ever wonder why the types of kidney and bladder stones we see today are completely different from what our ancestors faced 200 years ago?
It all comes down to societal wealth, diet, and nutrition.
Here is what changed:
• The Decline of Bladder Stones: 200 years ago, severe childhood malnutrition and low-protein diets caused an epidemic of bladder stones in young boys. As industrialization improved infant nutrition and access to dairy and meat, these endemic childhood stones practically vanished. Today, bladder stones mostly affect older men—usually due to structural issues like an enlarged prostate blocking urine flow.
• The Rise of Kidney Stones: As populations became more prosperous, diets completely transformed. Modern affluence brought an excess of animal proteins, highly processed foods, high sodium intake, and metabolic syndromes.
This dietary shift triggered a massive wave of upper urinary tract (renal) stones, making nephrolithiasis a modern lifestyle epidemic.
Essentially, as the world moved from malnutrition to overnutrition, our stones moved from the bladder to the kidneys!
