What can a bat teach us about hearing? 🦇
Bats use sounds and echoes to move around and understand their surroundings. Humans cannot hear the very high frequencies bats use because our ears can only hear a certain range of sounds.
This is why hearing tests check different frequencies one by one. A complete hearing test shows how well you hear low, middle, and high-pitched sounds.

Meet Alain Abou-Fayad
Biomedical Engineer & VNG Specialist at Beirut Ear Clinic

Alain began his journey at Beirut Ear Clinic in 2018 while still a biomedical engineering student at Saint Joseph University (USJ). After earning his degree, he traveled to France for advanced training at ORL Falguière, one of Europe's leading centers for vestibular assessment and balance disorders.

After returning to Lebanon, he started working closely with ENT doctors, supporting patients with hearing loss and balance disorders through comprehensive hearing and vestibular assessments.

With his expertise in clinical audiology and videonystagmography (VNG), Alain has helped many people improve their quality of life.

Beyond his clinical work, Alain is also the creative mind behind Beirut Ear Clinic's visual content, producing the videos and media that educate, inform, and connect with patients across our platforms.

Hearing loss in one ear can affect what you hear.
If someone talks from your weaker side, the sound has to travel around your head to reach your better ear. This makes the sound weaker. This is called the Head Shadow Effect and can make conversations harder, especially in noisy places.

They may look like headphones, but they are not.
Your ears clean themselves naturally. In most cases, you do not need to clean inside your ears.
If earwax becomes a problem, see your ENT doctor. Never insert cotton swabs or any other objects into your ears, as they can push wax deeper or injure the ear.
Before buying or using any ear-cleaning device, consult your ENT doctor.

قد تبدو هذه الأجهزة مثل سماعات الأذن، لكنها ليست كذلك.
الأذن تنظّف نفسها بشكل طبيعي، وفي معظم الحالات لا تحتاج إلى تنظيف من الداخل.
إذا أصبح شمع الأذن مشكلة، فاستشر طبيب الأنف والأذن والحنجرة. تجنّب دائماً إدخال أعواد القطن أو أي أجسام أخرى داخل الأذن، لأنها قد تدفع الشمع إلى الداخل أو تسبب إصابة للأذن.
