HPV and Throat Cancer: What You Should Know
Research has shown that certain types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), especially HPV-16, are linked to cancers of the throat and tonsils (oropharyngeal cancers).
HPV can be spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact, including oral s*x. While most HPV infections clear on their own, some persist and may increase the risk of cancer years later.
Risk factors for HPV-related throat cancer include:
• HPV infection (especially HPV-16)
• Multiple s*xual partners
• To***co use
• Excessive alcohol consumption
• Increasing age
How can you reduce your risk?
✔ HPV vaccination
✔ Avoid to***co products
✔ Limit alcohol consumption
✔ Attend regular health check-ups
✔ Seek medical attention for persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, or a lump in the neck

✅ Reapplying every 2 hours, especially after swimming
✅ Seeking shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
✅ Wearing a hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Nutrition Saint Lucia shares an important reminder about the dangers of smoking, va**ng, and second-hand smoke 🚬💨 in light of the upcoming World No To***co Day on May 31

To***co smoke contains harmful chemicals known to increase the risk of several cancers, including lung, throat, mouth, and cervical cancer. Second-hand smoke exposure can also seriously affect the health of children, families, and non-smokers.

Processed meats are classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning there is strong evidence it can cause cancer in humans, particularly colorectal cancer.

Examples include bacon, sausages, ham, salami, hot dogs, and corned beef. 🥓 🚮

Recent WHO-supported nutrition discussions increasingly highlight how ultra-processed foods may:
Disrupt healthy gut bacteria (the microbiome)

-Increase gut inflammation
-Damage the gut lining
-Increase risk of colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease

An ostomy is a surgically created opening on the abdomen called a stoma that allows waste to leave the body when part of the digestive or urinary system is not working properly.

Waste is collected in a special pouch, often called an ostomy or stoma bag, attached to the skin around the stoma.

Ostomies may be temporary or permanent and can be needed because of conditions such as cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, injury, or bowel obstruction.

Patients with an ostomy can continue to live active and fulfilling lives. 💪🏾💜🎗️
