Su***de is a major public health challenge, claiming the lives of more than 720,000 people every year. Every life lost has profound social, emotional and economic consequences, affecting families, friends, workplaces and communities around the world.

The year 2026 marks the third and final year of the triennial theme for World Su***de Prevention Day (2024โ€“2026): โ€œChanging the Narrative on Su***deโ€, with the call to action: โ€œStart the Conversation.โ€

Starting the conversation means creating spaces where people can speak openly about their emotional struggles, feel heard without judgement, and seek help when they need it. It means challenging harmful myths, reducing stigma and replacing silence and misunderstanding with openness, empathy and support.

Su***de prevention is not only an individual responsibilityโ€”it requires action at every level. Changing the narrative also means strengthening mental health services, improving access to quality care, implementing evidence-based su***de prevention strategies, and making mental health and su***de prevention priorities within public policy and institutions.

๐Ÿ’™ A conversation can make a difference.
Listen with compassion.
Reach out to someone who may be struggling.
Encourage help-seeking.
Together, we can create a community where no one feels they have to face their struggles alone.

For the first time in its history, a dedicated Clinical Society was established following the clinical meeting held on 18th March 2026, with the active participation of all staff categoriesโ€”marking a significant step forward in strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration.

The Society is committed to:
โ€ข Supporting continuous professional development of its members
โ€ข Promoting and encouraging high-quality research
โ€ข Fostering collaboration and professional fellowship
โ€ข Strengthening evidence-based clinical practice
โ€ข Upholding ethical standards in mental healthcare

At the Annual General Meeting, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist
Dr. Saman Weerawardhana was appointed as the President, and
Dr. Upeka Kariyawasam as the Secretary, alongside the election of 37 council members representing a truly multidisciplinary team.

This marks the beginning of a new chapter in advancing clinical excellence and unity within NIMH.
