🧠 A major milestone for the sustainability of Luxembourg's Parkinson's programme 🇱🇺

On 12 May, NCER-PD celebrated an important milestone at the new Luxembourg Research Clinic, marking the signing of a consortium agreement after two successful phases funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund - FNR

This step secures the long-term sustainability of the programme and further strengthens Luxembourg's role in advancing precision medicine for Parkinson's disease ✨

NCER-PD brings together strong national partners: Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), University of Luxembourg, Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL), and Laboratoire National de Santé (LNS), in close collaboration with Hôpitaux Robert Schuman and Centre Hospitalier Emile Mayrisch.

Over the past years, the programme has contributed to major advances in Parkinson's research through large patient studies, biomarker discovery, and international collaborations 🤝 such as the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI).

The event at the Luxembourg Research Clinic was also a moment to highlight the importance of working closely across research and clinical partners to turn science into real impact for patients 💡

On 30 April, more than 150 research participants and their friends and families came together at the Parc Hotel Alvisse to celebrate 10 years of research and care in Parkinson’s disease in Luxembourg 🎉

The event was opened by Prof. Dr Rejko Krüger and Stéphanie Obertin, Minister for Digitalisation and Minister for Research and Higher Education, their opening remarks emphasised the importance of close collaboration between scientists and clinicians to achieve the best possible outcomes for people living with Parkinson’s disease. 🤝

The programme featured an interactive “World Café” format ☕, where experts in research, clinical care and prevention shared insights and engaged in open discussions with participants—encouraging meaningful exchange and shared learning 💬✨

The event concluded with a final round-table discussion, which focused on future outlooks such as digitalisation and the importance of continued and tailored participation in research studies for people living with Parkinson’s disease, as well as for healthy control participants. 🧠💙

Am vergangenen Freitag fand der Luxemburger Weltparkinsontag 2026 unter dem Motto Patient Empowerment – Autonomie, Engagement und Selbstbestimmung statt – organisiert von Parkinson Luxembourg asbl.
Ein inspirierender Nachmittag, geprägt von persönlichen Einblicken, wissenschaftlichen Perspektiven und einem offenen Austausch zwischen Patienten, Angehörigen und Fachleuten.
Neben den spannenden Vorträgen waren auch unsere Teams von NCER-PD, ParkinsonNet und Plan Demenz Prävention (PDP) vor Ort. An ihren Informationsständen standen sie den Besucherinnen und Besuchern für Fragen, Gespräche und Einblicke in ihre Arbeit zur Verfügung.
Solche Begegnungen zeigen, wie wichtig Vernetzung, Information und Zusammenarbeit sind, um Menschen mit Parkinson im Alltag zu stärken.

Last Tuesday, the first Rotary “Espoir en tête” conference brought together inspiring minds and demonstrated just how much philanthropy can drive innovation in brain research.
Researchers from the LCSB - University of Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Institute of Health, and the Laboratoire national de santé shared exciting insights into the latest progress in understanding and treating neurodegenerative diseases. Prof. Rejko Krüger not only were among the recipients of the grant, he also gave a talk on brain health and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.

The conference wasn’t just about science, it celebrated how Espoir en tête funding acts as crucial seed money, helping young researchers innovate and build their careers. Thanks to the Rotary initiative, over €733,000 has already been raised to fund brain research projects across Luxembourg.

A heartfelt thank you to the Rotary Clubs of Luxembourg for their ongoing support, and for bringing together researchers, supporters, and the public around this important cause.
We’re already excited for 2026 and for the premiere of the Luxembourg-produced animated film “Allez Hëpp Hopp Hopp!” on 19 April at Kinepolis Kirchberg and Belval. For every ticket sold, €8 will go directly to support brain research in Luxembourg.
