Last week, I had the opportunity to speak at the National Dementia Conference which was organised by the Dementia Care Directorate. I presented Communic-Aid, a project exploring an intergenerational approach to dementia care.

I was incredibly honored to be nominated for the Exceptional Contribution to Dementia Research award. It was also wonderful to see
and spend time alongside my dear friends and colleagues, Dr. Doriella Camilleri and Dr. Francesca Farrugia, who were also speakers and were nominated for the same research award.

While I did not receive the award, I am delighted that our Chairman, Professor Charles Scerri, and Vice Chairman, Dr Anthony Scerri, were recognised jointly for their outstanding contributions and won the award. In addition, the team at the Malta Dementia Society was nominated for the Award for Best Team in Dementia Care.

It is a privilege to work alongside such dedicated individuals and to be counted among those committed to advancing dementia care and research.

I recently represented the Malta Dementia Society during a TV interview where we discussed the role of the Speech and Language Pathologist in dementia care, different types of dementia, myths and facts, and available services.

Did you know that speech therapists also work on oral motor skills. Why? Because the movements of the lips, tongue, jaw, and cheeks (known as the articulators)are essential for speech, feeding, chewing, and swallowing safely.

Strong muscles + good coordination = clearer speech and safer eating!

I recently introduced this fruit insert puzzle in the clinic, and it has quickly become one of those “simple but powerful” tools.

For example, one of my clients brought a dinosaur and we worked on sentences such as ‘id-dinosawru qed jiekol il-banana’.

Later on during the week, whilst working on the ‘s’ sound, we used the puzzle as a reward.

The moral of the story is that a toy can be used for many different speech and language goals, depending on how we structure the activity and what we focus on.

I am representing the Speech-Language Centre at a Science Fair, focusing on choking awareness and safe swallowing. The activity is being organised for primary school children.

Students are being introduced to the difference between the trachea (airway) and oesophagus (food pipe), and how choking occurs when a bolus enters the airway.

We are also playing an interactive activity about safe eating behaviours and when to seek adult assistance.

We had such a great time in our session exploring the parts of the body using a new puzzle I recently introduced in the clinic.

This hands-on activity is a fun and engaging way to support children’s learning while targeting important speech and language goals. Through play, the puzzle helps children build their vocabulary (e.g. naming body parts) and improve comprehension. It also encourages turn-taking, attention, and interaction which are key foundations for communication.

I’m pleased to be joining the parallel sessions at the National Dementia Conference to discuss the Communic-Aid programme. My presentation, "Communication as Connection," explores how intergenerational connection can support those living with dementia. This project was a long time in the making, and it’s a privilege to discuss the positive ways it is currently serving local caregivers and families.

I had the opportunity to discuss the role of speech and language therapists in the identification and management of Mild Cognitive Impairment with a group of nurses working both in hospital settings and in the community. We also explored how Mild Cognitive Impairment can progress to dementia and the importance of early recognition and intervention.

A sincere thank you goes to MUMN for the invitation and for the opportunity to share and exchange knowledge on this topic.

In today’s episode of heartfelt SLP moments

I was working with a teenager who uses AAC. He was fully capable of completing the task, but pressed “help” on his device. I gently said no… and he immediately responded with “mad.”

And in that moment, I paused.

Because not so long ago, this same teenager had no reliable way to express himself. Now, we’re having real back-and-forth exchanges…even negotiating feelings in the moment.

Moments like these make every challenge along the way truly worthwhile.
