At MOVE - The Sports & Exercise Medicine Centre, we’re incredibly proud of our MOVErs Nigel, Arianne & Jasmine who together with their colleague Daniel have collaborated on another case study as fellow professionals in sport psychiatry and psychology from both the public and independent sectors.
Have a look at their publication on Case Studies in Sport & Performance Psychology (CSSPP) ⬇️
What if exercise isn't just something we prescribe but something we tailor to the individual?
The authors Daniel Vella Fondacaro, Jasmine Borg, Nigel Camilleri and Arianne Bonello make a compelling case for moving beyond generic exercise recommendations and toward individualized exercise prescription for people with autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. It's a thoughtful reminder that meaningful behavior change depends on far more than simply telling someone to be more active.
A few ideas that stood out:
🏃 Exercise prescription should be individualized, not one-size-fits-all.
🧠 Sport and exercise psychologists have expertise that extends well beyond performance settings and can make valuable contributions in clinical and community contexts.
🤝 Sustainable participation depends on understanding motivation, autonomy, barriers, and the individual's lived experience.
🌱 Person-centered approaches can improve both physical and psychological wellbeing while supporting long-term engagement in physical activity.
As our profession continues to evolve, papers like this highlight the growing opportunities for sport and exercise psychologists to make an impact far beyond competitive sport.
