Over the years, the Nobel Prize has recognised scientists whose discoveries have not only changed our everyday lives for the better, but saved them and created new ones.

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) has become a familiar and, for many, easily-accessible option to turn to when problems are encountered in conceiving a child, with more than 10 million babies born.

Medicine laureate Robert Edwards came up with the idea of helping childless couples to conceive by fertilising the mothers’ eggs outside the body and then replacing them in the womb in the 1950s. He faced multiple setbacks while working to make IVF the treatment it is now along with physiologist Robert Edwards and nurse and embryologist Jean Purdy.

Their resilience and determination led to the birth of Louise Brown, the world’s first ‘test tube baby’, in 1978.

Is your birthday worthy of a Nobel Prize? Louise Brown’s was.

Louise was the first IVF baby, born on this day in 1978. Her very existence was made by Nobel Prize laureate Robert Edwards, whose research enabled IVF. Although the media referred to Louise Brown as a "test tube baby", her conception took place in a petri dish.

By removing an egg from the woman, allowing it to be fertilised in a petri dish and then replacing it in the woman, Edwards explained how eggs mature and how s***m is activated, and in cooperation with gynaecologist Patrick Steptoe, found a method for removing eggs from the ovaries. Louise Brown made history as the first child born as a result of in vitro fertilisation.

Known as the ‘father of assisted reproductive technology,’ Edwards was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2010, but two others may also have been recognised if they had lived longer.

Steptoe and nurse and researcher Jean Purdy were also IVF pioneers and with Edwards, established Bourn Hall, the world’s first IVF clinic. Together, their work has helped millions of people bring new life into the world.

Malta recorded its highest ever national IVF pregnancy rate (combined for all centres in Malta): 58%.

At Hope Fertility & IVF, all treated patients achieved a 60% pregnancy rate, according to the Embryo Protection Authority's own Annual Report — from 401 of the 431 total treatment cycles carried out in Malta in 2025.

We're honoured to have played a part in that milestone, and even prouder of the families it represents.

A useful and timely review from The Economist on IVF “add-ons” and the evidence behind them.

The key point is not that all innovation in IVF is ineffective. The underlying research examined ten specific add-ons and found that, for many of them, there is still limited or uncertain evidence that they improve live-birth rates.

For patients, the important questions are: Why is this being recommended? What outcome is it expected to improve? How strong is the evidence? And are the benefits, limitations and costs being explained clearly?

At Hope Fertility & IVF Clinic, we believe innovation should always be accompanied by transparency, responsible interpretation of evidence and treatment decisions tailored to the individual patient.
