This year, the Disability Equality Training (DET) Team has seen a significant increase in requests for DET sessions delivered by CRPD to private companies and public sector organisations.

These sessions play an important role in addressing knowledge gaps around disability and imbue participants with greater awareness of inclusion in the workplace. Drawing on real-life experiences, these sessions also create a safe environment where participants can discuss, ask questions and engage directly with CRPD trainers, who themselves have a range of impairments.

The latest session was delivered to employees at Esplora.

'Do You See Me?' is the theme of this year’s Learning Disability Week. Being seen means having access to information that is presented in a more accessible way.

In 2024, CRPD launched the Easy, Accessible, Simple and Effective (E.A.S.E.) project under the Erasmus+ programme. Completed in 2025, the project provided training to participants from various agencies, including Aġenzija Sapport and Jobsplus, on creating easy-to-read materials.

As part of the E.A.S.E. project, a survey found that people preferred Easy Language documents that include visuals, pictures, simple wording, and options to access information in both written and audio formats. People with intellectual disabilities reported feeling more confident, empowered, relieved, and happy when information was accessible to them.

Easy Read does not just address persons with intellectual disabilities, but it also benefits older adults, people with dyslexia and immigrants. It helps ensure access to important information on topics such as finance, health, and education.

CRPD Commissioner Rhoda Garland, Project Manager Chris Palmer and the High Commissioner of Malta to Jamaica George Borg are attending the 19th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP) at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.

This year's overarching theme, marking 20 years from the Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, is celebrating and consolidating achievements and shaping the next phase of implementation in a changing world.

Other subthemes include creating a world free from exploitation, violence and abuse for all persons with disabilities; strengthening care and support systems to ensure the empowerment, autonomy and independence of all persons with disabilities and enhancing accessible civic engagement, leadership and advocacy in political and public life.

Yesterday, CRPD staff attended the launch of Sette Giugno 1919: Memory & Ritual at St John's Co-Cathedral. The exhibition explores the collective memory of the Sette Giugno events through memory and ritual.

Part of the exhibition features five tactile emblems that visitors can explore through touch, contributing to a more accessible experience for blind and visually impaired visitors. This part of the exhibition was developed in collaboration with CRPD. Each emblem is also accompanied by an audiodescription - providing further historical and artistic context.

We commend St John's Co-Cathedral for being at the forefront of this initiative. The craftsmanship behind the tactile elements helps make a significant chapter of Malta’s history accessible to a wider audience.

The exhibition is open at St John’s Co-Cathedral until the end of the month. More information is available here 👉 https://shorturl.at/5JgWY
