Cos it takes a village

Cos it takes a village Hi, I am Maria, a psychotherapist working with adults in individual and group settings.

I specialise in trauma, relationships, and personal growth, with a particular focus on perinatal mental health. The group is led by Maria Muscat, a warranted Gestalt psychotherapist with an interest in perinatal mental health, anxiety and depression as well as trauma.

Sometimes having similar concerns brings people together; it gives a sense of purpose, common goals, and support for one another. I like to call it the 'power of connection' - and this is, in part, what happens in my Mothers' Circles and Support Groups and workshops.

As a therapist-led space, these groups offer more than just a chance to meet other mums. Alongside meaningful connection, there is also room to explore the deeper challenges; the anxiety, the low moods, the intrusive thoughts in a totally safe and supportive environment.

I have seen this happen time and again: women walking in as strangers and leaving with new friendships, a sense of belonging, or simply the reassurance that there is someone they can reach out to the next time they need support - or even just a coffee date.

Most people don't come to therapy asking to explore their ways of being.

And rightly so; they come because they are grieving, struggling in relationships, feeling anxious, or overwhelmed.

And therapy is absolutely a place for those concerns.

Often, however, the immediate problem becomes a doorway; into a deeper understanding of ourselves, our relationships; and the ways we have learned to navigate the world.

For me, that is where some of the most meaningful therapeutic work begins.

What brought you to therapy may actually not be where the journey ends.

For a long time, ADHD was often overlooked in girls, partly because it can present differently.

Many girls do not show the obvious 'H' for hyperactivity. Instead, there may be inattentiveness, impulsivity, overwhelm, racing thoughts, and a constant effort to keep it all together. Over time, many become very skilled at masking these struggles.

But motherhood has a way of exposing what was once manageable. The routines disappear, sensory overload becomes part of daily life, and sleep is no longer guaranteed.

Suddenly, the strategies that worked for years may no longer be enough.

This post is for all of you neurodivergent mothers.

I see you.
And if you're looking for a space to connect with other mothers who understand some of these experiences, you're warmly welcome to join one of my upcoming events.

The next one is on Tuesday 11th August! This time we'll have a space to reflect and gentle movement paired with the perfect nourishment.

Some people think that a book, a podcast, or ChatGPT can replace therapy, but therapy is none of that, precisely because it is an experience

Knowledge is valuable, but it is not the same as experience.

It's a bit like learning to swim.

You can read about swimming, watch videos about swimming, and understand every swimming technique. But none of that is the same as getting into the water.

If you've ever struggled to hear your own voice amongst the noise of everyday life, I hope this will be an invitation to pause, reflect, and reconnect with yourself.

Those who know me, know full well that I am a believer in frienships. I am also a friend who invests because I have learnt that friendships don't just happen; they require effort and investment...just like any other relationship really.

Often I meet people and hear things like 'he/she didn't message me', 'they didn't organise anything', 'its been a while since we met up - probably he/she is busy'.

The days become weeks, which then become months and perhaps years. What I always say is; be the one to send that first message, to organise that meet up, to open your house.

Friendships don't survive on good intentions, they require dedication, effort and investment - but its worth it. Does this resonate in any way?

(p.s. - this is a card I received from a dear friend & it reflects what I truly hope for in my friendships)

Can we talk about therapy?

Unlike a friendship, the therapeutic relationship is not mutual in the same way.

The focus is exclusively on you; the therapist is there to support you.

And actually, one of the most important parts of therapy is the safety of that relationship - feeling that you can bring your thoughts, your struggles, and the parts of yourself you might usually hide.

We are wounded in relationships and in relationships we are healed.

The therapeutic relationship is one of those places.

Just like a pregnant woman, I believe there is growth in simply being.

Lately, as I've been spending time with my children, I've found myself reflecting on how important it is to stay present. We often think children need big ideas, elaborate activities, and expensive experiences; but I'm not so sure.

The connection that is slowly built through presence, through ordinary moments, through games, laughter, and shared time, is the kind that lasts.

After all, the most meaningful things grow quietly.

During the upcoming weeks I will be posting info videos about what therapy is and is not. I feel there are a lot of misconceptions which keep people away from starting their therapeutic journey.

In the first one I describe key differences between therapy and advice-giving.

Many people think therapy is about getting advice. Some even wonder, "Why pay a stranger when I can talk to a friend or ask ChatGPT?"

But therapy is not advice-giving.

The way you relate to your therapist often reflects how you relate to others; Patterns like avoiding conflict, people-pleasing, or struggling to express your needs can show up in therapy too.

These are often the same patterns that shape your most intimate and important relationships.
