When Your Child Stammers: What Parents Should Know 😌
Many children go through periods of stammering as their language skills develop. For some, it is a temporary phase. For others, it may continue and benefit from support from a speech and language therapist.
If your child stammers:
✨ Give them time to finish what they want to say.
✨ Maintain natural eye contact and listen patiently.
✨ Focus on what they are saying, not how they are saying it.
✨ Avoid telling them to “slow down”, “take a deep breath”, or “think before you speak”.
✨ Create calm, unhurried opportunities for conversation at home.
Stammering is not caused by nervousness, poor parenting, or a lack of confidence. Children who stammer have just as many important thoughts, ideas, and stories to share.
Early support can help children develop confidence in their communication and reduce the impact stammering may have on their daily lives.
If you have concerns about your child’s speech fluency, seeking advice early can make a real difference.
💙 Every child deserves to feel heard, understood, and confident when communicating.
