Malta loves fireworks. But what happens after the sky goes dark?
Fireworks do not simply disappear after they explode. University of Malta research has documented fireworks-related airborne particulate pollution and identified pyrotechnic metals in Maltese dust. Research has also detected perchlorate in outdoor dustfall and indoor household dust across Malta, while later work investigated contamination of Maltese environmental resources.
And perchlorate matters because the thyroid needs iodine to manufacture thyroid hormones.
Perchlorate can interfere with this process by inhibiting iodide uptake into the thyroid gland. With sufficient exposure and duration, this mechanism can potentially affect thyroid hormone production, with iodine status being an important part of individual susceptibility.
Hypothyroidism already occurs much more frequently in women, and thyroid function has profound implications for energy regulation, metabolic health, lipid metabolism, menstrual and reproductive function, pregnancy and overall wellbeing.
The existing Maltese research does not prove that fireworks are causing Malta’s thyroid disorders. The available ecological data cannot establish that an environmental exposure caused disease in an individual woman.
That does not make the issue irrelevant. It means we have a documented environmental contaminant + a biologically established thyroid mechanism + repeated exposure in a country with an extraordinary fireworks culture.
That deserves research, monitoring and serious public-health discussion!
Women are constantly told to examine their calories, their weight, their stress and their lifestyle when something goes wrong hormonally.
Yet human physiology does not exist separately from the environment in which we live, breathe, eat and drink. Nutrition matters enormously. So does iodine adequacy. So does metabolic health. And environmental exposure deserves a place in the conversation too.
Culture should never make environmental health a taboo subject.
