Back pain is considered a major health problem due to its high prevalence. In Malta, doctors often use the term "slipped disc" very broadly. If the diagnosis is not properly explained, patients may perceive their condition as something very serious and threatening to their well-being, which can negatively affect their quality of life.

Intervertebral discs can become damaged for various reasons, but not all damaged discs lead to serious complications. In fact, disc degeneration can begin when a person reaches approximately 30 years of age.

Upon receiving a diagnosis of a "slipped disc," some people decide to reduce their physical activity, refrain from lifting even light objects, and increase their time spent resting in bed. When consulting a doctor about back pain, it is important to ask how severe the damage to the disc or discs is, what types of exercise can be safely performed, and whether a referral to an exercise professional or physiotherapist would be beneficial.

Some doctors tend to adopt a very conservative approach and may advise against exercise and movement. However, this should not be the case in most situations. Unfortunately, patients may find themselves in a difficult position when receiving conflicting advice from healthcare professionals.

Bed rest should rarely be prescribed, except for a short period during the early stages of recovery or following a procedure such as an injection or surgical intervention. Structured exercise has been shown to aid recovery from back pain, reduce the frequency of future episodes, and lessen their severity.

One of the factors contributing to back pain is muscle weakness, particularly in the core muscles, as well as a lack of flexibility. When a person is insufficiently active, their physical conditioning deteriorates, making episodes of back pain more frequent.

Other important components of spinal health include education on proper lifting techniques, correct sitting posture, the importance of hydration for intervertebral disc health, and the implications of excess body weight.

Think a normal weight means perfect health? Think again...

🛑You can look completely lean on the outside but still face critical medical risks if you have a sedentary lifestyle and a poor diet. In medicine, this profile is known as TOFI (Thin Outside, Fat Inside) or "metabolically obese normal weight."

Your day-to-day habits matter far more than the number on your scale. Here is what happens internally when a normal BMI masks an unhealthy lifestyle:

🫁 Hidden Visceral Fat: A normal weight doesn't stop dangerous fat from wrapping around internal organs like your liver and pancreas, triggering chronic internal inflammation.

🩸 Insulin Resistance: Relying heavily on processed sugars forces your pancreas to work overtime, paving the way for Type 2 diabetes.

🫀 Cardiovascular Strain: Poor nutrition combined with zero exercise causes blood vessels to stiffen and spikes cholesterol, quietly increasing heart attack and stroke risks.

💪 Muscle Atrophy: Staying inactive trades calorie-burning muscle mass for fat, destroying your base metabolic rate from within.

The Bottom Line: Fitness is an inside job. Body Mass Index (BMI) only measures your basic height-to-weight ratio—it does not measure your actual metabolic health. Prioritize moving your body and eating whole foods today!

It is never late to revert the process!

🔥 Losing Motivation During a Fat Loss Journey?

One of the biggest challenges in any fat loss programme is when progress slows down or stops. It’s frustrating, understandable, and often the point where many people feel discouraged.

At the start, changes usually happen quickly. But as weeks go by, progress naturally slows and can eventually plateau. Remember — progress looks different for everyone. Some people may take up to 40 days to notice visible changes in body size, weight, or both.

The important thing to understand is this: even when you can’t see changes, your body is still adapting — especially when exercise intensity is gradually increasing.

Some powerful “behind-the-scenes” improvements include:
✅ Increased muscle mass – more muscle means higher energy use
✅ Better appetite regulation
✅ Improved insulin sensitivity
✅ Reduced chronic inflammation
✅ Better sleep & body clock regulation
✅ Stronger behavioural & psychological resilience

If you feel stuck, try adjusting your training by increasing duration, intensity, or variety.

🚫 But one thing is certain: stopping exercise is never the solution.

Stay consistent. Trust the process. Progress is happening — even when it’s not immediately visible.
