"Every Stage of Your Child's Life Needs a Different Version of You"
The first seven years — just love them. Unconditionally, completely, without conditions or agenda. Make them feel safe, wanted and like they belong somewhere in this world.
The next seven years — start teaching them. Not with lectures but with patience, boundaries and life lessons woven into everyday moments. This is where values are quietly built.
The third seven years — become their friend. Not the cool parent who says yes to everything but the trusted adult they actually want to talk to. The one they come to before they go anywhere else.
And then one day, you let go.
Not because you stop caring. But because everything you poured into them quietly becomes the strength they carry forward on their own.
Parenting isn't just about raising children. It's about building humans who don't need you to survive but always choose to keep you close.
That's the whole beautiful, heartbreaking, extraordinary job.

Sometimes the problem isn’t the behaviour. It’s what we’re expecting from the child in that moment.

We can find ourselves thinking, “They should be able to do this by now” or “Other kids their age can manage it.”

But age doesn’t tell us everything about capacity.
Before we focus on changing the behaviour, it can help to ask:

Is this expectation realistic for this child, in this moment?

Do they have the skills yet?
Are they tired, hungry, anxious or overwhelmed?
Does the environment make this harder?
Are we expecting independence before they’ve had enough support and practice?

Sometimes the child doesn’t need a bigger consequence or another reminder.

Sometimes we need to lower the step, add some support, and build the skill from there.

That isn’t lowering our hopes for our children. It’s giving them a realistic pathway towards them.

I talk more about understanding behaviour, building skills and supporting children through the hard moments in Guidance from The Therapist Parent.

🌱 Sometimes, our children don’t need us to teach them how to be, they simply need us to slow down, listen, connect, and learn alongside them.

🦋 Parenting is not about getting it right all the time, it’s about staying curious, building connection, and remembering that our children are teaching us too.

Children are always watching what love looks like, not just in the way we love them, but in the way we speak to ourselves, the way we allow others to treat us, the way we handle conflict, the boundaries we hold, and the relationships we choose to stay in.

They are learning what closeness feels like, what respect looks like, what apologies sound like, what safety feels like, and what they should expect from the people who say they love them.

💗 Let them see love that is kind without being controlling.
💗 Let them see boundaries that protect connection instead of destroying it.
💗 Let them see conflict handled without cruelty, humiliation, or fear.
💗 Let them see people take responsibility, apologize, repair, and try again.
💗 Let them see that love should feel safe, respectful, and mutual.

We cannot control every relationship our children will choose someday, but we can give them an internal reference point for what healthy love feels like.

Because when children grow up surrounded by respect, warmth, honesty, and emotional safety, those things become familiar to them, and familiar often becomes what they look for again.

Give them something beautiful to recognize when they find it. 🫶🏼

😕⁉️ Sometimes parenting leaves you with lots of questions — questions you may not always have the answers to.

💬 But what if the key isn’t always in finding the answers…but in changing the questions we ask?

🔄 A small shift in perspective can open up a whole new way of understanding children and ourselves as parents.

🌱 Connected Parenting is based on the Circle of Security Parenting® programme. It is a space to explore your child’s needs, understand what may be beneath their behaviour, and discover new ways of connecting and responding.

Connection isn’t the reward we give children once they’re calm, cooperative or behaving the way we want.

It’s often the thing that helps them get there.
Children learn best when they feel safe and connected. That doesn’t mean ignoring behaviour, removing boundaries or saying yes to everything.

It means recognising that connection and boundaries can exist together.
We can hold the limit.
We can say no.
We can repair what went wrong.
We can teach a different way.

But when a child is overwhelmed, disconnected or defensive, that teaching is unlikely to land.

Connect first. Teach when they’re ready to learn.
This is at the heart of therapeutic parenting — looking beyond simply stopping behaviour and helping children build the skills they need over time.

I explore this approach, with practical strategies for the difficult moments, in my book Guidance from The Therapist Parent.
