One thing I wish every new parent knew about breastfeeding... 🤱
Breastfeeding works on a demand-and-supply basis.
Every time milk is removed from the breast—whether through nursing or pumping—your body gets the message to produce more. If milk isn't removed regularly, your body gradually starts making less.
This became one of the biggest lessons in my own breastfeeding journey.
During the first few weeks, my baby struggled to latch. I knew that if I wasn't removing milk, my supply could decrease. So I started pumping regularly and feeding him expressed breast milk.
Those pumping sessions weren't just about filling a bottle—they were telling my body, "My baby still needs this milk."
As the days went by, I noticed exactly what the science explains: the more consistently I pumped, the more milk my body produced. Pumping helped me protect my milk supply while giving my baby the nutrition he needed until breastfeeding became easier.
As a dietitian, I understood the theory. As a new mum, I experienced how powerful it really is.
If your baby isn't latching yet, don't assume your breastfeeding journey is over. With the right support and regular milk removal, you can help maintain your supply while you and your baby learn together.
Every breastfeeding journey is different, and that's okay.
