It was World First Aid Day on Saturday, a reminder that basic first aid skills save lives long before an ambulance arrives. Response-Med’s certified courses — from First Response Emergency Care to First Response Emergency Care-3 (FREC-3)— build that first line of defence on every site we support.

🇪🇹 It’s always good to be back in Ethiopia 🇪🇹, reconnecting with our clients, partners, colleagues and friends. Despite the challenges the region faces, it’s encouraging to see real progress on many levels including infrastructure, development and importantly for us, in healthcare.

A special thank you to our remote site Emergency Physicians and Critical Care Nurses, who keep showing up for our mining, renewables and humanitarian projects across the region.

It’s a question we take seriously — through resilience training, psychological first aid, and simply making sure our field teams have a way to decompress between rotations.

🌬 Renewables Are Growing Faster Than the Medical Infrastructure Around Them

Solar and wind projects are landing across East and Southern Africa faster than the remote-site medical infrastructure built to support them.

A construction camp in the middle of a solar development doesn’t have a hospital next door — but the workforce still needs the same standard of care as any other high-risk industrial site.

HSE Isn’t a Checkbox. It’s a Discipline.

Health, safety, and environment compliance is often treated as paperwork: a policy filed away until an auditor asks for it.

We treat it as a discipline that has to live on the ground — in daily briefings, in how a clinic is stocked, in whether a supervisor knows what to do in the first five minutes of an incident.

🚑 The Golden Hour Doesn’t Pause for Remoteness

In Nairobi, the historic average ambulance response time was 162 minutes. New dispatch platforms have brought that down to around 13–18 minutes in urban areas - a real progress. But that progress runs on urban road networks and centralized dispatch.

On a remote mine site, construction camp, or off-grid solar project three hours from the nearest town, there’s no dispatch network to plug into. There’s no “urban average” to fall back on.

This is why Response-Med builds medical capability into the site itself — trained responders, stocked clinics, evacuation protocols — rather than relying on a system that was never built to reach that far in the first place.
