Let's break the Social Stigma!Post partum depression needs to be addressed and we need to raise awareness!
⚠️She is not a bad mother. She is suffering! She needs help!
Postpartum depression is a topic that is often not adequately addressed, meaning many women experience it without seeking help due to a lack of awareness, stigma surrounding mental health after childbirth, and sometimes even healthcare providers not routinely screening for it, leading to underdiagnosis and untreated cases.
Key points about why postpartum depression is often not discussed:
Misconception of "baby blues":
Many people confuse the mild, temporary "baby blues" that most new mothers experience with the more severe and persistent symptoms of postpartum depression, leading to a dismissal of concerns about mental health after birth.
Social stigma:
There's a societal expectation of new mothers to be happy and perfectly capable, which can discourage women from admitting to struggles with depression, fearing judgment or appearing like a "bad" mother".
