PEOPLE WHO KNOW | DR. CHIMOTA PHIRI

We all know that we have kidneys. But how much do we really know about them?

What do our kidneys actually do?

How would we know if something was wrong?

And what are some of the everyday things that could put our kidney health at risk?

In this edition of PEOPLE WHO KNOW, Dr. Chimota helps us understand our kidneys — what they do, what can happen when they are not working properly, the signs we should know, and why protecting our kidneys matters.

You don’t have to be a medical professional to start understanding your kidneys.

You just have to start the conversation.

Watch. Learn. Share. And ask someone today:

What do you know about your kidneys?

The Kidney Doctor, Dr. Chimota Phiri, gives us a glimpse into the important work our kidneys do every day - and what can happen when they are not working properly.

PEOPLE WHO KNOW…

In the last video, the Kidney Doctor talked about some of the signs we may notice as our kidneys are failing.

But what happens when kidney function becomes severely reduced? What signs might the body begin to show?

Dr. Chimota Phiri takes us further and explains.

Watch the full interview this Saturday.

We were all taught in school that most people have two kidneys.

But some people are born with only one kidney, and can live for many years without ever knowing it.

I am one of them.

Sometimes I wonder:

If I had known earlier, would I have lived my life differently?

How about you?

Do you believe that you actually have two kidneys?

Have you ever thought about how you would feel if you were told you had only one?

This week on PEOPLE WHO KNOW, we speak to the Kidney Specialist, Dr. Chimota Phiri.

YOU ARE INVITED - TAKE A STEP FOR KIDNEY HEALTH THIS OCTOBER

If you would like to help raise awareness about kidney disease in Malawi, October is a great time to start.

Throughout the month of October, Mphukira Foundation is inviting people everywhere to help us get more Malawians talking, learning and thinking about their kidney health.

We are inviting churches, companies, schools, community groups, families and individuals to take part.

Wherever you are — in Malawi or anywhere in the diaspora - you can do something simple.

Walk. Jog. Hike. Run. Ride a motorcycle or bicycle.

Invite your church members.
Bring together your staff.
Get your students involved.
Gather your friends, family or community.
Or simply take part on your own.

You choose the activity.
You choose the place.
You choose any day in October that works for you
Carry or display the message:

KNOW YOUR KIDNEYS
or
DZIWANI ZA IMPSYO ZANU

Take photos or short videos, post them on your social media platforms and share them with Mphukira.

But most importantly, start a conversation about kidney health.

You don't have to be a health professional to help someone become more aware of their kidneys.

Sometimes, a simple conversation is where awareness begins.

And the first question can be as simple as:

HOW MANY KIDNEYS DO YOU HAVE?

You might be surprised by the conversation that follows.

This October, take a step with us. Let's start the conversations.

Remember: kidney disease can be very silent. By the time some people discover that something is wrong, the disease may already be advanced.

DON'T WAIT FOR YOUR KIDNEYS TO FAIL BEFORE YOU LEARN ABOUT THEM.

Know Your Kidneys. Protect Your Future.

Kidney disease can feel far away, until it becomes personal.

People cannot prevent what they do not know, and with kidney disease, waiting until it becomes a crisis can come at a very high cost.

Lives can be lost, families are affected, finances are disrupted, and the emotional burden can be enormous.

But what if we developed a culture of talking about our kidneys before something goes wrong?

Awareness gives us an opportunity to act earlier.

Nkhwachi PN Mhango has lost friends to kidney disease and has other friends who are still fighting it today.

In this conversation, he shares why kidney disease has come very close to home.

From kidney failure to kidney awareness.

We cannot change what happened to Emmanuel Maliro, but together with his wife, Dr. Susan Brown, they have chosen to turn that experience into purpose through Mphukira Foundation....hoping his story can help someone else know sooner and protect their kidneys.

People cannot protect what they do not understand.

Let’s start the conversations. Let’s understand kidney health.

Kidney disease can be one of the most dangerous silent killers.

Many people discover kidney disease only when their kidneys have already failed, when dialysis becomes the treatment keeping them alive.

But knowing sooner can create more possibilities to act sooner.

And the first step is simply talking about it.

Conversations about kidney health help us learn, understand, ask questions and pay attention to simple but important things we may have ignored before.

Nkhwachi Peter Mhango shares how these conversations changed the way he looks at his own kidney health.

Watch his story. Start a conversation.
