Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme

Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme We conduct internationally excellent science to benefit human health. Our laboratories lead the region in sophistication, precision, breadth and throughput.

We conduct internationally excellent science to benefit human health with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa. MLW is built around excellent laboratories, strategically located in the largest hospital in Malawi, closely linked with the community and an integral part of the medical school. These relationships provide a unique opportunity replicated in few centres in Africa to study major health issues sp

anning both community and hospital. Malawi provides a unique supportive environment for our MOP, with government commitment to universal health coverage, strong engagement with research and willingness to innovate around evidence-based public health programmes. MLW surveillance and diagnostic platforms provide clinicians with early indicators of changes in the incidence of common and emerging diseases. Our combination of epidemiologic, clinical and laboratory science allows us, together with internationally leading collaborators, to determine the underlying mechanisms of important diseases. We study individual and community behaviour and bring this together with basic biology in order to plan appropriate interventions that improve health. Our translational pipeline, while providing an excellent academic environment, results in significant clinical trials and we transfer the findings to policy leading to improved health in Malawi and world-wide. We have two major well- established Programmes with clearly de-fined aims for the next 10 years, built on excellent achievements to date. These Programmes are:

- Preventing death from severe infection
- Transmission reduction in infectious diseases

The Programmes have specific objectives and key deliverables for 2018 to 2022. In addition, we have a Strategic Initiative to target selected high burden chronic diseases (lung impairment, stroke, blindness), particularly related to HIV. In partnership with the College of Medicine we have Training Aims to attract, train and retain local and international senior scientists. Through our partnership with the Ministry of Health, our Policy Aims ensure that our research is both relevant and applied to improve human health.

MLW's research work relies heavily on nurses. They are the ones that help us bridge the scientific theory and bedside practice, ensuring that studies are ethical, safe and patient centered.

This year's theme calls for investing in and empowering nurses to handle growing global health challenges. That is why, as MLW, through the digital library in the CREATOR Building, nurses have access to information sources and journals to stay up to date on global trends and research that improve their work.

We are so proud of the MLW nurses team!

MLW Nurses, in collaboration with the Care of Cares initiative and the National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NOM), have donated hygiene and safety supplies valued at over MWK 1 million to Mdeka Health Centre. This donation was fully funded by the nurses themselves, which demonstrates a strong culture of service and professional responsibility.

The donation, comprising handwashing buckets, cleaning tools, safety boots, gloves, and other essential items, aims to strengthen infection prevention and promote a safe working environment for health workers and patients. Particular emphasis was placed on supporting the maternity wing, which continues to experience rising patient numbers.

Receiving the items, Health Centre In-Charge Ibrahim Tanga commended the nurses for their timely intervention, noting the positive impact the supplies will have on service delivery.

Alice Kusakala, Chairperson of MLW’s Care of Cares initiative, emphasized the importance of safeguarding nurses as frontline caregivers, while NOM Chairperson Mirriam Hanjahanja highlighted the role of such support in addressing growing healthcare challenges.

WORLD MALARIA DAY PRESS RELEASE

Advancing the fight against malaria: MLW and partners champion digital access to treatment guidelines

The 2026 world malaria day marks a significant milestone in the quest to end Malaria as an important innovation in malaria case management: the integration of Malawi’s malaria treatment guidelines into a digital platform known as MAGICapp is officially launched. This application is designed to enable Malawian healthcare workers to access up-to-date malaria treatment guidelines easily, seamlessly, and in real time, regardless of their location.

The Malawi National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) recently endorsed the introduction of dynamically updated malaria treatment guidelines in the country. The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme, through the EU-funded Mitigating Antimalarial Resistance Consortium for Southern and East Africa (MARC SE-Africa) facilitated engagement with NMP Malaria Case Management Technical Working Group, a collaboration that was central to the development of the Malawi-specific version of the MAGICapp containing the national malaria treatment guidelines.

Speaking on the importance of this innovation, Clinical Epidemiologist at MLW Dr. Donnie Mategula, emphasized the critical role of accessible evidence-based guidance, stating; “As drug-resistant malaria threatens the progress we have made, Malawi’s response must be anchored in rigorous, transparent, and trusted evidence. Clear and accessible treatment guidelines are essential for helping health workers and decision-makers act consistently, confidently, and effectively to protect lives.”

Commending the breakthrough, Prof. Karen Barnes, Coordinator for MARC SE-Africa, noted; “With the growing threat of drug-resistant malaria in Africa, investment must be made to ensure effective malaria treatment policies and practices. This requires user-friendly malaria guidelines based on up-to-date, trustworthy local and global evidence. As they did when threatened with combatting chloroquine resistant malaria in the 1990s, Malawi’s National Malaria Programme is again leading the way in Africa by launching user-friendly, dynamic, digital malaria treatment guidelines following international best practice standards. This will enable the safe and effective use of different treatments in different regions of Malawi, a WHO recommended approach to keep our malaria treatments working.”

This year’s World Malaria Day will also mark the official launch of the MAGICapp in Malawi—a milestone in which MLW played a significant role.
Reflecting on this collaboration, Prof. Per Olav Vandvik, Chief Scientist for the MAGIC Evidence Ecosystem Foundation-developer of the App-, shared; “As part of the MAGIC Evidence Ecosystem Foundation, we are honoured to work alongside the Malawi Ministry of Health in developing and publishing updated treatment guidelines in MAGICapp, supporting a coordinated and effective response to this growing threat. By combining strong methodological standards with clear, accessible formats, graphical summaries, and decision aids, this work supports informed decision-making across different levels of care and strengthens the response to one of the most urgent challenges in drug-resistant malaria today.”

World Malaria Day falls on 25th April and for this year the commemoration is under the theme “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can, Now We Must.” Over the years, malaria has remained a major threat to human life worldwide, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives annually.
