CMST, QECH JOIN EXPERTISE TO STRENGTHEN MEDICINE SUPPLY PLANNING
The Central Medical Stores Trust (CMST) and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) have commenced a two-day joint quantification exercise in Blantyre aimed at strengthening medicine supply planning and reducing stock-outs.
The initiative has brought together experts from both institutions to forecast QECH's future pharmaceutical needs, share technical knowledge, and develop a comprehensive supply plan to ensure the consistent availability of essential medicines.
The exercise is expected to conclude on 9 September 2026 with a draft Memorandum of Understanding to guide implementation.
Speaking during the opening session, CMST Acting Director of Pharmaceutical Operations, Mrs Beatrice Banda, emphasised the importance of collaboration in addressing supply chain challenges, noting that "for Malawi to overcome stock-outs, there is a need for concerted efforts from all stakeholders."
She added that the exercise will enhance forward planning and contribute to a more reliable supply of medicines and medical products.
QECH Clinical Pharmacist, Mrs Chikhulupiriro Chimwaza-Yiwombe, described the exercise as an opportunity not only to forecast the hospital's pharmaceutical requirements but also to strengthen capacity in quantification through knowledge sharing and collaboration. She further highlighted ongoing efforts to transform QECH Pharmaceutical Services in order to enhance patient care and improve health outcomes.
Through strategic partnership and proactive planning, CMST and QECH are laying the foundation for a stronger, more resilient healthcare supply chain that will ultimately benefit patients across Malawi.
