Recently, there has been increased international attention regarding hantavirus cases reported outside of Mexico, leading many residents and travelers to ask whether there is any current risk in Mérida or the Yucatán Peninsula.

At this time, Mexican health authorities have confirmed that there are no reported cases of hantavirus in Mexico or Yucatán. Current information indicates that the recent outbreak being discussed internationally remains isolated and under epidemiological surveillance.

Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious disease primarily associated with exposure to infected rodents and their urine, saliva, or droppings. Infection can occur when contaminated particles become airborne and are inhaled, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas such as storage rooms, abandoned buildings, barns, or spaces with rodent infestation.

Early symptoms may resemble the flu and can include:

• Fever
• Fatigue
• Muscle aches
• Headache
• Chills
• Nausea or abdominal discomfort

In more severe cases, breathing difficulties and serious lung complications may develop.

Basic prevention measures include maintaining clean living spaces, avoiding contact with rodent droppings, sealing possible rodent entry points, and properly ventilating enclosed areas before cleaning them.

Living in Mérida’s tropical climate can take some adjustment, especially for newcomers not accustomed to the intense heat and humidity. Every year, many residents and visitors experience heat-related illnesses that can range from mild dehydration to serious medical emergencies.

Common heat-related conditions include:

• Heat cramps — painful muscle spasms caused by dehydration and loss of electrolytes.
• Heat exhaustion — symptoms may include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, and rapid heartbeat.
• Heat syncope — fainting episodes caused by prolonged heat exposure and dehydration.
• Rhabdomyolysis — a more serious condition involving muscle breakdown, often caused by excessive heat and physical exertion. If untreated, it can lead to kidney damage.

Early recognition and treatment are very important. First aid measures include moving to a cool environment, hydration with water and electrolytes, loosening clothing, cooling the body with fans or wet towels, and avoiding further heat exposure. I am now available for home visits in Merida and surrounding areas such as Progreso, Chelem, and Chixchulub.

As a general practitioner, my practice is a little different from most doctors because I provide in-home medical care and remain available 24/7.

Originally from Merida, I am very happy to be practicing here once again while continuing to provide home visits throughout the area.

Many patients find these visits very convenient, as medical care is available in the comfort of their home with a simple call.

All calls and appointments are handled personally. This provides the opportunity to ask about your main discomfort so we can determine whether you need an urgent visit or a standard appointment. If I am unavailable to answer, my calls will be forwarded to my assistant, who speaks English, and he will help arrange the appointment for us.

The objective is to always answer your calls so you do not have to leave a message.

An electronic file is maintained for every patient, so I can also serve as your primary care doctor if you wish.

A portable EKG machine is also available during visits so we can perform an EKG and keep a record of your heart health.
