What a privilege to care for someone who proves that more years donโ€™t have to mean less strength. ๐Ÿ’ช

I had the honor of caring for Joan MacDonald (trainwithjoan) โ€” a remarkable woman who has inspired millions by showing what can happen when we choose to move, train, and become stronger. ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ

As an orthopedic surgeon, I see every day how important muscle strength, mobility, and physical activity are for maintaining independence and quality of life throughout our lives. ๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿ’ช

Joan is a powerful reminder that there is no age limit to becoming stronger.
We cannot stop the years from passing.

But we can choose how we move through them. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Thank you, Joan, for trusting me with your care. It was truly an honor.

Dr. Michell Ruiz

๐Ÿ˜Ž 5 TIPS - Prevent Running Injuries

โš ๏ธ According to Runner's World, over 50 percent of all runners get injured every year.

๐Ÿ’ช No matter if you are an avid runner or you are wishing to start running for the first time, we would recommend the following tips that can help you prevent some of the common injuries.

โœ… Stretch for a week first to loosen up stiff joints and connective tissue.

โœ… Choose non-impact aerobic activity like biking, elliptical gliding, rowing or swimming to do when injuries are first felt. It is never a bad idea to cross-train in any of these activities every other day in place a running.

โœ… Warm up properly and then stretch. Run nice and easy for about 5-10 minutes, then stretch once you are warm and the muscles and joints are more pliable. Never stretch "cold."

โœ… Replace running shoes often. Do not walk in your running shoes since you walk differently than you run.

โœ… Use a foam roller for myofascial release - This help to relieve post running soreness.

โš  If there is any or discomfort during these activities, ๐Ÿ’š I am here to assist you with a proper diagnosis and suitable treatment!

๐Ÿค“ Identify and Strengthen Muscles

The muscles that support the shoulders are responsible for maintaining joint stability and allowing a wide range of movements.

The main muscles involved are:

โœ… Deltoids: It's the primary muscle covering the top of the shoulder and is divided into three portions:
๐Ÿ”˜ Anterior Deltoid: Forward arm abduction, flexion, and internal arm rotation.
๐Ÿ”˜ Middle Deltoid: Outward arm abduction (lifting the arm laterally).
๐Ÿ”˜ Posterior Deltoid: Arm extension and external rotation.

๐Ÿ’ช To strengthen them, you can perform exercises like Shoulder Press, Lateral Raises, or Front Raises.

โœ… Rotator Cuff: The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and their tendons that stabilize the head of the humerus in the glenoid cavity of the scapula. These muscles are:
๐Ÿ”˜ Supraspinatus: Aids in arm abduction and joint stabilization.
๐Ÿ”˜ Infraspinatus: Contributes to arm's external rotation.
๐Ÿ”˜ Teres Minor (Lower Third): Also assists in arm's external rotation.
๐Ÿ”˜ Subscapularis: Facilitates internal arm rotation.

๐Ÿ’ช To strengthen them, you can perform internal and external rotations with resistance bands or exercises with light weights.

โœ… Trapezius: The trapezius is a large muscle extending from the back of the skull and neck to the spine and scapulas (shoulder blades). Its main functions include:
๐Ÿ”˜ Upper Part (Upper Trapezius): Raises the shoulders (shrugging action) and assists in tilting the head to one side.
๐Ÿ”˜ Middle Part (Middle Trapezius): Retracts and approximates the scapulas.
๐Ÿ”˜ Lower Part (Lower Trapezius): Depresses the shoulders and retracts the scapulas.

๐Ÿ’ช To strengthen them, you can perform exercises like Pull-Ups or Barbell Rows.

โœ… Back Muscles: These muscles include the rhomboids and the levator scapulae. Their primary function is to retract and stabilize the scapulas.

๐Ÿ’ช To strengthen them, you can perform exercises like Shoulder Shrugs, Shoulder Blade Squeezes, Dumbbell Rows, and Scapular Elevations.

โš  Remember that it's essential to perform these exercises correctly and with the proper technique to avoid injuries.

If you experience knee pain or have an existing injury, consult an orthopedist before starting any exercise program.

๐Ÿค Accurate diagnosis at your first visit, effective treatment starting day one.

Some conditions I treat

๐Ÿ”ด Olecranon Bursitis: Inflammation of the synovial bursa located at the tip of the elbow, causing visible swelling and pain when resting on or bending the arm.

๐Ÿ”ด Golfer's Elbow: Pain on the inner side of the elbow due to overload of the flexor tendons; common in repetitive gripping and rotational movements.

๐Ÿ”ด Tennis Elbow: Pain on the outer side of the elbow caused by inflammation of the extensor tendons; worsens when extending the wrist or gripping objects.

๐Ÿ”ด Cubital Tunnel Syndrome: Compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow, causing tingling, numbness, and weakness in the fourth and fifth fingers.

๐Ÿ”ด Sprains: Stretching or tearing of the elbow ligaments due to a forced movement or trauma, resulting in pain and joint instability.

๐Ÿ”ด Tendinitis: Irritation and inflammation of one or more elbow tendons, typically caused by repetitive movements or mechanical overuse.

๐Ÿ”ด Cartilage Injuries: Damage to the tissue lining the articular surfaces of the elbow, leading to pain, crepitus, and restricted range of motion.

๐Ÿ”ด Osteoarthritis: Progressive degeneration of the elbow's articular cartilage due to wear and aging, causing chronic pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility.

๐Ÿ”ด Dislocation: Displacement of the elbow bones out of their normal position, typically from a fall onto an outstretched hand; this is an orthopedic emergency.

๐Ÿ”ด Nursemaid's Elbow (Radial Head Subluxation): Subluxation of the radial head in young children caused by a sudden pull on the arm; results in acute pain and inability to move the arm.

๐Ÿ”ด Fractures: Partial or complete break of one or more elbow bones (humerus, radius, or ulna) due to direct trauma or a fall, requiring immediate medical attention.

Two decades of experience treating shoulder injuries taught me one thing: time matters. That's why I work with precise diagnosis and effective treatment from day one.

Shoulder Conditions I Treat

๐Ÿ”น Painful Shoulder Syndrome
Persistent pain in the shoulder and surrounding structures caused by overuse, poor posture, or inflammation, with progressive limitation of movement.

๐Ÿ”น Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder)
Inflammation of the joint capsule that causes severe stiffness and progressive loss of motion. Without proper treatment, it can last for months.

๐Ÿ”น Calcific Tendinitis
Calcium deposits in the shoulder tendons that trigger episodes of acute pain, especially at night or when lifting the arm.

๐Ÿ”น Rotator Cuff Injuries
Ranging from inflammation to tears of the shoulder's stabilizing tendons, causing pain, weakness, and difficulty moving the arm.

๐Ÿ”น Shoulder Dislocation
Displacement of the humeral head from its socket due to a fall or impact. Requires prompt reduction and rehabilitation to prevent recurrence.

๐Ÿ”น Subacromial Impingement
Compression of the shoulder tendons between bony structures. Causes pain when lifting the arm and is one of the most common sources of shoulder pain.

๐Ÿ”น Cartilage Injuries
Joint damage from trauma or wear that produces pain, crepitus, and progressive functional loss.

๐Ÿ”น Glenohumeral Osteoarthritis
Progressive wearing of the shoulder cartilage leading to chronic pain, stiffness, and crepitus with functional limitation.

๐Ÿ”น Shoulder Fractures
Fractures of the humerus, clavicle, or scapula from trauma, managed with orthopedic or surgical treatment followed by rehabilitation.

โš ๏ธ 9 SIGNS - SERIOUS INJURY

๐Ÿ”ด Severe pain: If the knee pain is so severe that it prevents you from walking or putting weight on the leg, it is a clear sign that the injury could be serious.

๐Ÿ”ด Inflammation and swelling: Significant inflammation and swelling around the knee can indicate damage to the ligaments, meniscus, or other soft tissues.

๐Ÿ”ด Instability: If the knee feels like it is going to buckle or give way, or if you cannot control its movement, there may be a ligament or meniscus injury.

๐Ÿ”ด Deformity: If the knee appears deformed or twisted abnormally, it could be a sign of a fracture or severe dislocation.

๐Ÿ”ด Popping or clicking sounds: If you hear popping or clicking sounds when moving your knee, it could be a sign of damage to the meniscus or other soft tissues.

๐Ÿ”ด Difficulty extending or flexing the knee: If you cannot fully extend your leg or fully bend your knee, there may be an injury to the ligaments, meniscus, or other soft tissues.

๐Ÿ”ด Inability to bear weight: If you cannot bear weight on the injured leg, there may be a fracture, dislocation, or other serious injury.

๐Ÿ”ด Internal bleeding: If there is visible bruising around the knee or unusual swelling that does not go away, there could be internal bleeding.

๐Ÿ”ด Fever or chills: If you have a fever or chills along with knee pain and swelling, you may have an infection.

If you experience any of these signs, it is important to seek medical attention from a trusted orthopedic doctor.
