Maybe … we don’t always have to jump in on ‘fixing’ our children.

“How do we change this?”
‘How do we help him improve?’
‘What can we do?’

These are commonly asked questions by parents.
When worry and concern kick in, it’s normal to feel like we need to do something to change things.
Let’s learn to be more aware of our own anxieties, and how it affects our children.

Accept that everyone has limitations and normalize expectations. Instead of getting too preoccupied with ‘fixing’ problems, help them to make use of their strengths to cope with struggles.
Acknowledge successes, be it small or big.
Validate efforts, focus on positives instead of just their shortcomings.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do is to meet our children on the same page.
Follow their pace instead of rushing to ‘fix’ and pulling them forward.
Maybe … sometimes they don’t urgently need solutions, but simply just being supported, understood and acknowledged.

Is My Child LAZY… or Could It Be ADHD?

Today is International ADHD Awareness Day.
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that affects attention, impulse control, activity level, and emotional regulation.

Common Misconceptions About ADHD
1. "My child is just lazy, naughty, or difficult."
If a child's learning or behavioural difficulties persist or worsen over time despite appropriate support and guidance, there may be an underlying condition rather than simply poor behaviour or lack of effort.

2. "They will grow out of it."
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder and there is no known cure available at present. Without recognition and intervention, children may be at greater risk of developing mood problems such as anxiety, affected self-confidence, or emotional dysregulation.

3. "We all grew up like this. Children just need to learn to cope."
ADHD symptoms exist on a spectrum, ranging from mild to severe. Even children with milder symptoms may experience ongoing challenges in learning, relationships, emotional well-being, and daily functioning if their difficulties are not recognised and appropriately supported.

4. "All young children are hyperactive."
ADHD is much more than simply being physically active. Many children with ADHD have difficulties with emotional regulation and impulse control, which contributes to not just physical hyperactivity, but also poor impulse control, behavioural challenges, and emotional outbursts.

5. "ADHD only affects boys."
Girls can also have ADHD, although their symptoms may present differently. Having ADHD does not mean only being physically hyperactive. Girls with ADHD may instead show more symptoms or emotional dysregulation. As a result, girls are frequently diagnosed later than boys.

Early recognition makes a difference. Children can better understand their strengths and challenges, develop effective coping strategies, and achieve their full potential.
