【Blurred vision is not always just presbyopia — it may be a warning sign from your macula.】
Many people assume that worsening vision is simply caused by ageing or tired eyes and that a new pair of glasses will solve the problem. However, when the macula is affected, delaying an examination may put your vision at risk.
The macula is located at the centre of the retina and is responsible for sharp central vision. We rely on it to read, recognise faces, see straight lines, distinguish fine details and identify colours.
When macular disease develops, it may not affect the entire visual field at first. Instead, the quality of vision in the centre may gradually change, making early symptoms easy to overlook.
⚠️ 7 common warning signs of macular disease:
1️⃣ Blurred or hazy vision: Objects may look as though they are covered by a layer of mist, and fine details become less clear.
2️⃣ Straight lines appear distorted: Door frames, tile lines or grid patterns may look bent, wavy or crooked.
3️⃣ A dark or empty spot in the centre: Part of your central vision may appear blocked or missing.
4️⃣ Difficulty reading: Words may look blurry, disappear or seem to jump, making it difficult to focus.
5️⃣ Colours appear faded: Colours may no longer look as bright or vivid as before.
6️⃣ The problem is more noticeable in one eye: Covering one eye may make the abnormal vision easier to detect.
7️⃣ Difficulty recognising faces: You may still see the person, but facial details become increasingly difficult to identify.
🧠 Why do these symptoms occur?
The macula is the central area responsible for detailed vision. When its light-sensitive cells are damaged, or when its function is affected by ageing, degeneration, bleeding or swelling, the image may already be distorted before it reaches the brain.
This can cause blurred vision, wavy lines, missing areas in the centre of vision and faded colours.
Because peripheral vision may remain relatively normal, many people initially mistake these symptoms for eye strain or worsening presbyopia.
👁️ Why is checking one eye at a time important?
Macular disease may not affect both eyes equally.
When both eyes are open, the stronger eye may compensate for the weaker eye, making the problem harder to notice. Covering one eye at a time can help reveal distortion, blurring or a dark spot in either eye.
📌 Who should be particularly careful?
People who are older, have a family history of macular disease, smoke, or have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes should pay closer attention to their macular health.
When an older family member suddenly has difficulty reading, sees straight lines as curved or struggles to recognise faces, do not assume that it is simply presbyopia.
✅ The key message: Do not wait until severe vision loss occurs before seeking help.
When symptoms persist, recur or become more noticeable, arrange a comprehensive eye examination as soon as possible.
Early detection may provide a better opportunity to manage the condition, slow its progression and protect your remaining vision.
