WHY DOES MANUFACTURING QUALITY MATTER IN BIOLOGICS? 🔬
In biologics and other advanced healthcare products, quality begins long before a product reaches a healthcare professional.
Unlike many conventional small-molecule compounds, biologics can be particularly sensitive to manufacturing conditions. Changes in raw materials, processing, storage or handling may affect important product characteristics.
That's why manufacturing quality deserves attention.
🧪 Starting materials
Identity, source, purity and traceability help establish control over the materials entering production.
⚙️ Manufacturing controls
Validated processes and appropriate environmental controls help reduce unwanted variability between batches.
🔬 Quality testing
Product-specific tests assess relevant characteristics such as identity, purity, potency and contamination, as applicable.
📊 Ongoing monitoring
Stability studies, batch records and continued quality oversight help identify changes and maintain control throughout the product lifecycle.
One important distinction: passing quality tests does not automatically establish clinical effectiveness. Quality, safety and clinical evidence address different questions, and all must be evaluated appropriately.
Good science depends on knowing what a product contains, how consistently it is made, and what the available evidence actually supports.
