Your father had it. That doesn’t mean you have to.

Mr. Lim sat across from me, holding a list of medications.

“Doctor, my father had diabetes. My uncle lost his leg to it. My grandmother went blind from it. I think it’s just my turn eventually.”

I hear this almost every week. Different families, same resignation. But family history tells us your risk is higher. It doesn’t tell us your outcome is fixed.

I asked him to describe his father’s life before the diagnosis. Long hours at the coffee shop, rushing meals, sweet kopi because “no time to boil water lah.” Five hours of sleep, and stress with nowhere to go.

Then I asked about his own life, and it was almost a copy-paste of his father’s.

We cannot choose our genes. But we can influence many of the factors that shape what happens next.

We started with three simple changes: kopi kosong instead of sweet kopi, a 20-minute walk after dinner instead of heading straight to the couch, and checking his blood sugar every three to six months instead of “whenever.”

Eighteen months later, his glucose was comfortably within the normal range. Same genes, different outcome.

Your family history is not there to scare you. It’s there to give you the chance to act earlier.

Next time, don’t let your genes decide your future.

🧂 Reducing salt intake is a fundamental step in protecting kidney health.

For people with chronic kidney disease, KDIGO 2024 recommends less than 5 g of salt per day, which is roughly equivalent to one level teaspoon in total. This includes cooking salt, sea salt, pink or Himalayan salt, and hidden salt in sauces, stock cubes, seasoning powders and processed foods.

Eating less salt supports better blood pressure control and improved kidney and heart health. 🩺❤️

⚠️ However, if your blood sodium level is low, do not restrict salt without medical advice. The cause should be assessed first, and your diet should be individualised by your doctor.

💊 Medicines work alongside a healthy, low-salt diet and supplements cannot replace these fundamental measures.

🏃‍♀️ Exercise and healthy eating are the foundations of kidney care and should come first as the main pillars of protecting kidney health. They work together with prescribed medicines and supplements to support overall treatment.

For people living with chronic kidney disease (CKD), KDIGO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week, or as much as your health and physical ability allow. This can be split into 30 minutes on 5 days and even shorter sessions still count ✅.

Brisk walking, cycling and swimming are great examples. Moderate intensity means your breathing gets faster, but you can still talk (just not sing 🎶).

🏃‍♀️ Regular exercise helps control blood pressure and sugar level, supporting kidney health, heart health ❤️ and overall wellbeing.

This is the first post on this page. Follow for more practical kidney health information based on reliable evidence and guidelines recommendation📚.
