When we talk about Robotic-Assisted Surgery (RAS) in Malaysia, it is often viewed as a premium service driven by private hospitals to attract medical tourists. But the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is proving that robotics is not a luxury—it is a critical tool for population health and systemic efficiency.
The NHS recently unveiled a radical strategy to make robotic surgery the standard of care. By 2035, they project that 500,000 operations will be supported by robots annually, up from just 70,000 in 2023/24. Furthermore, they expect 9 in 10 keyhole surgeries to be delivered with robot assistance within the next decade.
The UK has realized that the upfront cost of surgical robots is outweighed by long-term savings in hospital stay reductions, lower complication rates, and increased workforce productivity.
It is time for Malaysia to adopt this forward-thinking model and make robotic precision the default for our patients.
在马来西亚，当我们谈起机器人辅助手术（RAS）时，它通常被视为私立医院为了吸引医疗游客的高端服务。然而，就连最务实（抠门）的英国国民医疗服务体系（NHS）都提倡机器人技术，证明了机器人手术绝非奢侈品，而是提升人口健康和医疗系统效率的关键工具。
NHS最近公布了一项指标，到2035年，每年将有50万例手术在机器人的辅助下完成。同时，他们预计在未来十年内，90%的微创手术将由机器人辅助完成。
