Happy Belated Teacher’s Day!

I have been meaning to share this. I have been performing laparoscopic surgery for over 20 years. I remember when I was transitioning from intermediate to advanced laparoscopic surgery - I had a mentor/boss called Mr Bruce Ramsay. I was working in the UK at the time.

He was one of the few surgeons at the time who was accredited to perform a total laparoscopic hysterectomy for stage 1 endometrial cancer.

I remembered I was post-call (after night shift) and I stayed on because I wanted to assist and learn from my mentor. I was suturing the vaginal vault and I was taking a longer than usual time. He was very patient and I apologize for it. He was so sweet and encouraging and said “you are doing good, just tired.”

Mr Ramsay - Thank You. In my career, I have had amazing mentors and teachers to help me to be where I am today.

Miscarriage happens in approximately 1:10 pregnancies and this increases with age. Regardless, it is emotionally difficult to deal with.

I recently had a patient who has been married for many years. She has had a few unsuccessful IVF cycles. She got pregnant spontaneously this year and we were really happy for her. However, the embryo did not develop and she miscarried.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) has been renamed to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).

As a specialist, I welcome the change in this“misnamed” often misunderstood diagnosis. Patients often worry about ‘cysts’ in the ovaries. However, the underlying issue is with a disease of endocrine and metabolic in nature.

The transition is meant to take over 3 years where in 2028 - new guidelines about diagnosis will be published. Hopefully, this will help us streamline patients into getting better treatment!
